I was wondering if there are any works out there that discuss purgatory and the second coming? What I am wondering is if theologians theorize that purgatory will be empty when the time comes because there are to few rightous in the world. Or, will everyones atonement in purgatory end at the same time when the end comes near? Maybe, the souls in purgatory will stay there as the second coming takes place until their atonement is complete? I don’t really have any idea if there has been any revelation on this or if the Church has made any statements about but, I am really curious to hear/ read what ideas people have about this.

Thanks!

Just a word of advice to avoid confusion - Don’t get too hung up on the physics of “time” when postulating about the afterlife. What we think of as “years in Purgatory” here may be the blink of an eye in another realm. Here’s what Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict) wrote about it in his book Eschatology.*The transforming ‘moment’ of [Purgatory] cannot be quantified by the measurements of earthly time. It is, indeed, not eternal but a transition, and yet trying to qualify it as of ‘short’ or ‘long’ duration on the basis of temporal measurements derived from physics would be naive and unproductive. The ‘temporal measure’ of this encounter lies in the unsoundable depths of existence, in a passing-over where we are burned ere we are transformed. To measure such Existenzzeit, such an ‘existential time,’ in terms of the time of this world would be to ignore the specificity of the human spirit in its simultaneous relationship with, and differentation from, the world. (Ratzinger, Eschatology, p. 230)*In that light, those who are “living on earth” at the second coming could well have their purgation occur in such a blink in earthly time. Ratzinger may have even discussed that in Eschatology in that chapter, but my memory fails me at the moment… 😊

Another thought to consider: Purgatory is really part of heaven–the souls there are all destined for heaven, and in a sense are already there, but not able to enjoy it properly until they have been purified. Since heaven will exist after the world ends and is replaced by a more lasting world, so could purgatory in that sense.

This is lengthy, but what i see the Scriptures collectively teaching is that the Lord’s return is the “day of Christ,” and is the first resurrection the “resurrection of the just,” “the resurrection of life” (Jn. 5:28,29; cf. Lk. 14:14; Acts 24:15) and when living believers meet the Lord in the air, and henceforth shall “ever be with the Lord,” and thus shall go with Him to the battle of Armageddon, and afterwards face the judgment seat of Christ, with believers being rewarded or suffering disapproval and loss according to how they built His church, but being saved despite this, as well as sitting in judgment of the lost at the resurrection of the unjust.

Pt. 1:

“Now we beseech you, brethren, by** the coming of our Lord** Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,” That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand." Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;" (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3)

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the** last trump**: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” (1 Corinthians 15:52)

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be** caught up together with them** in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)

“And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and **unjust.” **(Acts 24:15)

“And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” (John 5:29)

“But the** rest of the dead** lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.” Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years." (Revelation 20:5-6)

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints," To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 14-15)

“And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.” And the** armies** which were in heaven** followed him** upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean." And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God." (Revelation 19:13-15)

“Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?” (1 Corinthians 6:3)

“And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and** the time of the dead**, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.” (Revelation 11:18)

“Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.” (1 Corinthians 4:5 )

“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before** the judgment seat of Christ**.” (Romans 14:10)

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” (Philippians 1:6)

“That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;” (Philippians 1:10)

“Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.” (Philippians 2:16)

“Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in** the day of our Lord** Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 1:8)

“And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so** that day** come upon you unawares.” (Luke 21:34)

“But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.” For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night." For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape." But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that** that day** should overtake you as a thief." (1 Thessalonians 5:1-4)

Pt. 2:

“And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him** at his coming**.” (1 John 2:28)

“Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or **absent, **we may be accepted [well-pleasing] of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or **bad.” **(2 Corinthians 5:9-10)

“Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.” For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building." (1 Corinthians 3:8-9)

“Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for** the day shall declare it**, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.” If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a **reward." **If any man’s work shall be **burned, **he shall suffer **loss: **but he himself shall be **saved; **yet so as by fire." (1 Corinthians 3:13-15)

“As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the** day of the Lord Jesus**.” (2 Corinthians 1:14)

“Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and **crown, **so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.” (Philippians 4:1)

“For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?” (1 Thessalonians 2:19)

“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12)

“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (2 Timothy 4:8)

“The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in** that day**: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.” (2 Timothy 1:18)

Pt. 3:

And i also see that is in this life in this world with its temptations as being the place of both testing, chastisement and purification, and that all the texts which clearly speak of the immediate postmortem experience of the saints as describing them as being with the Lord. And that those that infer otherwise either speak of the Lord’s disapproval and loss of rewards according to their works, or to that of differences in the punishment of the lost, according to their works.

“In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” (1 Corinthians 5:4-5)

“Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.** In the world** ye shall have **tribulation: **but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

“Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” (1 Peter 1:6-7)

“Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for** the coming of the Lord** draweth nigh… Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience [all in this life]. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of **Job, **and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” (James 5:8,10-11)

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh** the world**, even our faith.” (1 John 5:4)

“Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience [being tested] by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect [complete in passing all tests], he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:7-9)

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not." For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire** to depart, and to be with Christ**; which is far better:" (Philippians 1:21-23)

“And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.” And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, **To dayshalt thou be with me in paradise." **(Luke 23:42-43)

“And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, **receive my spirit.” **(Acts 7:59)

“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7)

“Therefore we are always **confident, **knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:” (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)" We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:6-8)

"Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 4:17)

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life:** in thy presence is fulness of joy**; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalms 16:11)

This does.

Just what I was looking for! I will check it out, thank you.

Both good points, I really want to explore the topic with as much depth as I can and the issue of time and space (not in the sense we understand it of course) in heaven/ purgatory is interesting to me. Thank you again!

Thats quite a wall o’ text! I will have to read over this carefully. I see you reference the end days for the living, but I am curious about the state of purgatory when it comes. I hope in the scripture you quote there is something I can glean but if not could you offer your view more succinctly? Thank you though for the replie(s)😃 I will pray for guidance as I read them over.
