“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
I’ve heard that some theologians have a different take on the above quote. In the days when the scriptures were written, punctuation had not yet been brought onto the scene. All writings were done without punctuation marks. After several translations, and many years later, punctuation marks were inserted, and that was at a much much later date.
Now, some think that the comma in the above quote should have been after the word “today” and not after the word “truth”. That would then tell us that Jesus said that he was telling the truth TODAY, that the criminal would be with him in paradise. Not today - but at some later time. This would leave room for this man to spend some time in Purgatory. It would also perhaps answer the question some have as to why he would go straight to Heaven on that day, when Jesus didn’t ascend to Heaven until 3 days later; and also why he would go straight to Heaven at all since he did not ask for forgiveness of his sins, which probably he would do if he entered Purgatory.

Where did you hear, or who told you, that lie? The concept of Purgatory existed long before what you call the “roman church”. The Jews of old, Pharisees, Essenes, etc., all
believed in a “holding place” for the souls of the dead in which to be purified before entering Heaven. The Catholic Church is a continuation of Judaism and has defined this
holding place as Purgatory ( a place where to purge, or clean ). That Purgatory exists has been verified and documented.
As for indulgences, that is another mis-conception that is popular among non-Catholics.
No one can buy an indulgence. The Church itself has never sold indulgences. They can only be earned through works of charity and mercy. In the 1500’s Tetzel “sold”
indulgences at the instigation of the Pope, who DID NOT speak for the Whole Church at the time. The Pope needed money for various personal reasons and had Tetzel give an
indulgence for the “donation” of sums of money. Sorry to say, and we all admit, that
at that time that many of the clergy were corrupt ( concerned more with personal and secular things than spiritual ) and reform was need.
