Good question my man. This is also often used as a proof text to try to argue against the Catholic concept of baptism, as well, although I will stick to its relevance with purgatory.
Quite simply, the question arises out of a confusion about purgatory. It is not a “holding” place, it is the final steps of sanctification. And let’s take Jesus’ statement that today the thief would be with Him in paradise. Considering we DON’T KNOW how long purgatory lasts, it’s a moot point. People often try to compare an eternal and a temporal realm as though the two correspond exactly, and it just ain’t so. Of course the thief would be with Him that day, because that day they both die. Once they are dead though, who is to say how time passes outside of the temporal realm? Can you see how this reasoning can get sticky quick?
Also keep in mind that Jesus said Paradise, NOT the Beatific Vision. The understanding of the Church is that the OT saints had to be led up to Heaven by Jesus, because even what is referred to as “Abraham’s Bosom” is not the same as being in the presence of the Almighty, and all Christians can agree on this. So here’s the million dollar question: Where does it say the thief didn’t go through purgatory when all the OT saints were lead to heaven? It doesn’t.
Bottom line, if you know you’re not as perfect as Jesus, that needs to get fixed at some point. If you’re saved and still not perfect, it has to happen after death.
