Since you identify as Christian but not Catholic, you may not be aware of the explanation offered by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which (along with the sources it cites in the references) may give you a good start. You can read the relevant section of the Catechism here.

Thanks. I’d say the idea of Purgatory is mystical.

Simplistically, it’s the doormat at the front door to Heaven intended to be used in order that no dirt comes through the threshold. 😉
 
Basically, Purgatory is where the souls of those who died in the friendship of God but at the same time still need to expiate some sins are put.
It’s like a runner who was in first place and right before who crossed the finish line he tripped and fell and ended up in second place.
