Purgatory while alive/ Saint Gemma answered my novena

I had a question and posted it to Apologetics but I didn’t see it. Catholicism for Dummies says a chronic painful illness can be purgatory while we’re alive. Is that true? I have erosive lichen planus and it feels like purgatory sometimes lol!

Also I was doing a 9 day Novena prayer to Saint Gemma for healing of my conditon when I read the prayer for day 5.

Teach us then, dear St Gemma, to accept the sacrifices and sufferings that God permits in our lives, especially those that are very much against our own will and desires.

I think that was the answer, I feel it was the answer. I have to accept this condition. So that was pretty cool thing to happen! 🙂

Yes, you can start by telling God that with great joy, you willfully and heartily accept the suffering that you are experiencing now in exchange for your time in Purgatory.

If you want you can also tell God that you are offering this suffering in atonement for the sins of the souls in Purgatory, that it will expedite their suffering there, and that they may immediately go to heaven.

God bless you abundantly, OP!

In a former parish one of our priests told us a poignant story about the death of his mom who was dying from a particularly painful type of cancer. While her children cried and lamented around her deathbed she would tell them - do not cry for me. This may be the only way I can attain heaven! (I’ve never forgotten this!)
