 The RCIA director at my parish said at the last meeting that the church never taught when Purgatory is. She said Purgatory could be here on earth. Later that night I looked in the Catechism and it clearly taught it occurs after death (paragraph 1040 I believe). I understand we are ‘punished’ on earth as well. I confronted her tonight sbout her mistake. Her response? "Oh you take things too literally!’ How on earth am I being too literal? Has this happened to anyone else? Your thoughts?

Thanks!

I would talk to your priest. I mean RCIA teachers are their to teach specific doctrine, and when it comes to specific details…it can get kind of innacurate. Not with all of them of course, but obviously so in your situation.

Unfortunately, and as I have said before, the priest won’t do anything. He doesn’t accept Purgatory. WHen it comes to All Souls and All Saints he says it’s all the same thing! I mentioned how the youth ministry director made a mockery of reconcilliation and he did not do anything. So why would he listen to me now?

The Y.M. took us on a trip one time. It was a friday during Lent. I reminded her that we can’t eat meat and she tells us we could if we want. Then she says we should just go to confession afterwards. She was laughing too! And she doesn’t believe she needs to go to a priest. She uses a protestant bible during youth night. And I am pretty sure the priest is well aware of these things!

I’d think about finding another Parish. It doesn’t seem (from what you’ve said) that those running it are creating a very spiritually nourishing (wow a cliche if i ever heard one) enviroment.

RUN, Don’t walk to another parish with a priest and staff in line with the CCC and the doctrines of the Church. What you have described is scandalous and should be reported to the presiding bishop ASAP

You should leave this parish for another one ASAP! I would write a letter to your Bishop and c.c. the priest about your concerns.

Pray, Pray, Pray.

The Catholic Churches teaching on Purgatory is that it is a state of temporal punishment which can occur in this world or the next. When we commit a sin either mortal or venial and are forgiven we must still atone for that sin. So somewhere along the way we must find that atonement. It can be through prayer, fasting, charity, etc. or through physical or spiritual hardship as well. Now I do believe personnally and I also believe that doctrine would back me up on this that some may face purgatory here on earth before they die. An example would be my Grandfather who lived a pretty good life and tried to follow God as best he could. At the end of his life he went through a series of strokes that would knock him down and bedridden him and he would way back out of bed and another stroke would hit him. His last two years on earth would be classified as a misery but he never gave up faith in God, never cursed Him for what was happening to him. Anyway I believe that was my Grandfather’s purgatory. He suffered in this world so he wouldn’t have to in the next and as such I believe he went straight to heaven after he fell asleep for the last time.

What I am trying to say is yes your teacher is wrong if she does not think that purgatory happens after death but I wanted to point out that purgatory happens here on earth as well.

Who cares man, I doubt your RCIA director has a formal education in theology. Many Catholics dissent from official Church teachings because they don’t study their Faith. Don’t let that bother you, read to her from the Cathechism 😃

It happens to me a lot on these forums. Some Catholics just don’t want to listen to the Church. Or they just don’t trust the Church. I pity them.

Our purgation happens here on earth or after death. Purgatory is for those who have not been sufficiently purged from their faluts and venial sins here on earth. Hell is for those who die in unrepented mortal sin.

I understand that martyrs may have their suffering for faith counted as purgation…

Funny you should mention that. Just tonight, my RCIA instructor said that purgatory is an optional belief that many Catholics don’t hold. He also told us that no where in the bible does it say that Jesus is God (although in his defense, he did point out that the Nicene creed says so). Then he explained that all religions can lead to God and heaven and all that is necessary to go to heaven is “be good”.

A combination of actually reading the CCC, this forum, and wide reading of good, solid, Catholic literature makes me cringe when he says these things.

I’m afraid to tell you but she was not wrong in saying that our purgatory could be here on earth. I would think that you would like that idea. All of our sufferings could be at least part of our Purgatory here on earth. As long as you offer up your sufferings to Jesus.

Have you ever heard of indulgences? Dumb question right? lol Of course you have. What do you think indulgences are? You could receive a plenary indulgence for saying a Rosary in a Church with other parishoners or your family and you will receive a plenary indulgence. But it has to be received when you are in a state of grace and have received communion and gone to Confession within 8 days of the activity. Let’s just say that you have received a plenary indulgence when you are in a state of grace & met all other requirements for receiving such indulgence. Then let’s say something happens to you… you will not spend one minute in purgatory after your passing, but instead go straight to heaven. That is why your RCIA teacher said that you could have your purgatory right here when you are alive on this earth.

Jesus told His Apostles, “whatever you bind on earth is bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth is loosed in heaven.” Jesus gave that power to His Church, to bind & loose. The priests give us our penance after we confess our sins. We can also receive indulgences here on earth to pay for the temporal punishment of our sins. Jesus allowed this for us to receive. Isn’t Jesus awesome?! You should happy that it is possible for us to have our purgatory right here on earth. 👍

Now that is NOT true. :nope:

I’m so glad you are soon to come home to the Church of Jesus Christ (no not the mormon church lol). For a new comer you could sure use that book in my last post. Be sure to check it out. Take advantage of everything in the Catholic Church especially indulgences. :yup: But it is not so simple to receive an indulgence as it seems.

I love the Catholic Church and I love that God gave me the gift of Faith to be here in His Church. There is so much here in His Church. I love the Sacraments. They are the ordinary means of receiving the graces of Jesus Christ. Confession & the Eucharist are great means of receiving His grace. I love my Catholic faith!

Which reminds me, she also said a while back that Christ is not necessary for Salvation!

What did she say that there was a Introduction to Jesus 101 remedial class when those that don’t except Jesus Christ as their Savior get to “Purgatory”?

Peace!

As reported, she said nothing wrong. Purgatory can - should - occur in this life, rather than in the next.

It’s not a place, but a state of being. “Where” it is, is not nearly as important as what it is, & what is for.

Keep going up the chain of command. Contact the bishop’s office. Don’t let this slide.
