I was wondering, are there any early Church quotes that indicate that they believed in Purgatory being a separate place, rather than a temporary stay in hell/hades? Because the Orthodox see it as being in hell temporarily (and they do not call it Purgatory) - and when I read about the early Church, it seems they believed this too… and that is very confusing for me, why do then we believe in Purgatory as something separate from hell? OR… is it? maybe us and the Orthodox believe in the same thing but call it differently?

Hell is eternal
Heaven is eternal
Purgatory is not eternal, but is a preparation for entering Heaven.

Perhaps if you could provide some of the quotes that “seem” to be indicating that Purgatory is a temporary stop in Hell we could comment on them and your interpretation of them.
