Matthew 18:23-35 explains a lot about purgatory. Read it! Because it has helped me to understand things about purgatory. Likewise ask yourself this question from scripture: What does Jesus mean when he says, “And so “will” my heavenly Father do with you, unless you sincerely forgive your brothers and sisters?” also: What will the heavenly Father do and where will this take place? Why will the heavenly Father do it? For what reason? Can I avoid or prevent my purgatory? How? What did that man, that debtor, need to do in order to avoid purgatory?" These are the questions which we fail to answer daily in our lives.

Had the man forgiven the debtor from the heart and found joy in it, in the way scripture says, “JOY!”, Acts 20:35 “Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive!” This means that the greatest blessing you can give to anybody is to forgive them! I know this is hard and seems impossible! But if we want to avoid purgatory we have to realize that heaven is greater earned by forgiving, than grabbing somebody by the throat!
