rinnie,

St. Paul says that the OT is useful as a source of teaching, but he would the first to admit that it needs supplementing from the NT. The OT is definite from the beginning concerning man’s survival after death, but for the greater part of its course it is vague concerning the constitution of man and what element of man actually survives. It is from the late book of Wisdom that we first learn that ‘the souls’ of the departed just are in the hand of God, 3:1. Similarly it is only in the last centuries before Christ that the doctrine of future rewards and punishments is to be found. And it is only in Macc. 12:39-46 (2nd century BC) that we read of prayers and sacrifices for the dead with the implication that there is an intermediate state in which the departed are in a permanent state neither of rewards nor of punishment, and which we have come to call Purgatory.

That there is further an intermediate state after death in which the departed have not received the final reward of the good and can still atone for sin was also known at this time. Judas Maccabeus collected and sent to Jerusalem a sum of money to have a sacrifice offered in atonement for the sin committed by men who had fallen in battle under his command. As the Greek reads, ’ he made propitiation for the dead that they might loosed from sin.’

See 1 Corinthians 3:15. The last words of the verse clearly imply some penal suffering, and as Paul connects it so closely with God’s judgement, it can hardly be confined to suffering in this world, but seems to include the idea of purificatory suffering after this life, i.e. in purgatory.

In his book, “The Spirit of Catholicism,” author Karl Adam gives a very succinct and beautiful treatment on the ecclesia patiens - The Church Suffering. It is very readable and there are numerous copies of the book circulating. I highly recommend it. It may also help you with other questions you have on other subjects.

BTW - I think this topic is being discussed on the apologetics board.

***where does it talk about purgatory in the bible. ***This past Sunday’s gospel reading concerning Lazarus and the Rich Man.

The Rich Man was in a place of torment but showed concern over his brothers not ending up in the same place as him. Compassion is a grace from God. Thus, he couldn’t have been in hell because those in hell are forever cut off from God’s graces and he obviously wasn’t in heaven because there is no suffering in heaven. So even though scripture doesn’t specifically name it, the only place that the Rich Man could have been in was in purgatory.

Thank you but I can not take credit for it. Read “The Biblical Basis for the Catholic Faith” by John Salza available from ‘Our Sunday Visitor’ at 1-800-348-2440 or visit their website at www.osv.com – it contains 250+ pages of ‘eye-openers’ like this one.
