I have read the book the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren; how does the church feel about his teachings? Is our mission in life to evangelize the faith in Jesus?

When I was meeting with a small group at a Methodist church. They were using this book for discussion. I found it just very “generic” Christian. I simply added some points of view that were Catholic.

I doubt if the Church has an official position on this book. People seem to think that the Church has to have an official position on everything, which isn’t true. What the Church does do is give us her teachings and expects us to use mature Christian discretion in making decisions.
Having said that, the proper approach to a generic type Protestant book like the PDL is to take what good you find in it, and discard all that is contrary to the Catholic Faith. For example, if it encourages you to evangelize and share the Faith as the opportunity arises, that is consistent with Catholic teaching. If it tells you that you can have absolute assurance of salvation or that we are saved by faith alone, then ignore it.

After coming into the catholic church, I was surprised to see how many catholics quote C.S. Lewis and how many catholic book stores carry his books. Lewis was not a catholic. His conversion to Christianity but not catholicism lead to a cooling of his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien that was only mended shortly before Lewis’ death.
I’d imagine that given time, PDL might be similarly embraced by the catholic church assuming it does not contradict catholic teaching.

The Purpose Driven Life was life-changing for me. In fact, I started small group discussions of the book last Lent at my parish (Catholic). There are a significant number of things in the book that are not in line with Catholic teaching. But I agree with the poster that said take the good and ignore the rest.
I’ve started reading Habits of the Soul, which bills itself as “the Catholic answer to the Purpose Driven Life”. YUK. It’s not *this * Catholic’s answer.

I was once involved in a group of “seeker christians” who used Warren’s book. I think it is a piece of garbage. Its blatantly heretical in a number of ways (even from a traditional protestant point of view its questionable); and it contains a very poor use of Scripture. It is watered-down, marketed yuppie christianity and not the real thing. Stay away from it.

The Purpose Driven Life contains a lot of good lessons, but whoever reads it should watch out for its emphasis on sola fides, as that can be very non-Catholic, and caused me to think like a protestant when I first read it
