Whew! The breathtaking speed at which the thread moves straight on into namecalling!

Ever wonder how your posts come across to us, Jack?

😃 :rotfl:
if you think that is name-calling then I would say that is a perceptional problem
moving onto ad hominems is not really very helpful:D :rotfl:

ironically your reaction reinforces my point neatly

I’m sure the site can be useful for people who have simple non-controversial questions and don’t argue about the answers given. Also people who don’t meet up with and incur the ire of some of the forum’s ā€œnotablesā€.
On what basis are you ā€˜sure’? Do you not think your opinion of whom CAF serves is somewhat condescending? Or open to question? Particularly as you offer no support for your allegations.

ironically your reaction reinforces my point neatly - it makes as much sense as Muslims rioting to protest comments about them being irrational and intolerant!šŸ‘

A perceptual problem? :extrahappy: Whatever do you mean by that, I wonder? And, Jack, would you be ever so kind as to please define ad hominem. Just so that we all can agree that what you are saying and what we are hearing are the same thing.

And as for namecalling, Jack, calling CAF names falls under the category of namecalling.

Oh please do explain! How exactly does it reinforce your point?

šŸ˜‰

Also, I thought you weren’t trying to make a point? Is that changed now? If so, what else has changed?

And this is not flaming in what way exactly?

Dare I suggest, Jack, that comparing my replies to a Muslim riot is a false analogy, Jack. Which one of the points which you are supposedly not trying to make would I be reinforcing then?

 :dts:

oh dear - is there a name for such a massive tautology???
suggesting that the current name for CAF does not describe the apparent mission is not name calling as such
suggesting that it is seems to be a tactic to divert the discussion
I think it best to ignore you:thumbsup:

I want to genuinely ask what the purpose of CAF is seen as, esp vis a vis enquirers?
I don’t find this site helpful for people enquiring about the RCC, and I would personally tell people to avoid this site if they are wanting to learn about the Church. I won’t tell you what our Curate thought of some of the opinions expressed…
Is CAF meant to be helpful to enquirers, or is it more a defensive site somewhere on the lines of the Jesuits’ Counter-Reformation?
Some posters seem to prefer to deter people they see as unsuitable to become Catholics to encouraging them - I won’t name names but there are a few.
This is a genuine question, not an attempt to score points.
I find CAF extremely helpful in understanding the Catholic faith. Also, it helps me what obsticles I will face in opposition to my journey towards the Catholic Church (I think I can see the Tiber from here;) ).

I have learned a lot about other non-Christian religions which I had an unfair bias to at one time. I don’t think other forums would be so welcoming to other religions as CAF.

I’m pleased for you
I found this site to be an obstacle to my journey towards the Catholic Church sadly (although there have been some great people here who have been encouraging on the plus side)

ahhhhhhhhhhmmmm … we now return back to our originally asked question in the OP:

Purpose of CAF?

I think the forums just naturally grew out of the web site that provides well sourced answers to a lot of questions about the Catholic faith.

The purpose of the forums is a place for any and all to meet in peace to discuss a variety of issues from the very grave to the very jovial. I don’t think there is anything sinister about it at all. The place is only as good as the people that post on it.

At first I didn’t like that the site was moderated, I have since change my mind on that and find the moderators here to be first rate (as compared to Brand X forum sites where the moderators are not so spiffy :p).

in which case, in my opinion, the forum is not fit for purpose
I can see your point. I too have had my run-in’s with various people here as I am sure many have had their run-in’s with me. But whatchagonnadew? 🤷 I figure we just gotta forgive and drive on. Ignore the ones that annoy us and laugh with the ones that make us smile. Have a coke and a smile, mate 😃

I’m pleased for you

I wouldn’t let people’s opinions deter you from your journey because they are just that…opinions. Please don’t let that discourage you. Sure I’ve found some replies on CAF rather upsetting at times but also realize that although they are not trying to be mean spirited they are going by misinformation & misunderstandings.

Have you gone around the CA site to also help answer your questions? I found many of the tracts & This Rock articles very informative. There are a lot of very informative Catholic sites out there & I find new ones practically every day.

Again, don’t let some uninformed remarks get you down:console:

Fr James was telling me how the Church in Kenya actively encouraged the use of condoms to prevent HIV transmission when he was there as a seminarian
hwoever this is getting off the point really, I’m not wanting to get into yet another recycled discussion about the rights and wrongs of any Catholic doctrine full stop - I am just raising the issue of the mission of CAF, and trying to make people aware of how CAF comes across to me. I realise that my comments will likely fall on barren ground in most cases
Jack,

Is your concern with the tone of the posts or the content?
