Purpose of novena/prayer

I’ve been pondering about this question lately, especially since I pray novena so that I could change job.

If God has plan my life so perfectly, what’s the purpose of me praying novena? I don’t think it will ever change God’s plan.

Besides that, if God wants me to get job A, will I get it even if I don’t pray as it’s His will already?

I guess, I’ll never know the right answer, but I’m just curious…

Praying isn’t about changing God’s plan, it’s about being part of it. Praying is an action that “tells” God we need Him, shows our recognition that we rely on Him for our lives and everything in them. Acknowledgment of His love and care for us, through prayer, helps us unite to Him more fully.

When my mother had a brain aneurysm rupture at age 52 on Christmas Eve, our whole family, all our friends, and literally thousands of strangers at Masses around the country were praying for her recovery. Did our prayers “change” God’s plan? No. Did what happened to my mother inspire someone who had turned away from God to turn back and pray to Him? Did it inspire someone who never knew God to pray to Him, thus starting a relationship with Him? We won’t know the answers until we get to heaven one day, but we like to think so. We trust that something wonderful happened as a result of the suffering we all went through. Perhaps the whole reason it happened was so one person would come back to God and pray. (My Mom is fine by the way, a true miracle in every sense of the word, praise God!!)

Praying doesn’t change God’s plan, it is part of God’s plan. When we pray we are cultivating a relationship. Just as it is essential for us to spend time with people, talk with them, it is equally as important to spend time and talk (and listen) to God.

Novena prayer is for nine consecutive days. It is devotion, a dedication of persistence. Novena also usually involves the communion of Saints.
We say a prayer, or pray a Novena is not trying to change God’s plan but to submit our trust, dependency and obedience to God Almighty.
It is a communication between a child and his loving father.

Plus, Jesus said “Ask, and you shall receive.” If we don’t ask, does it mean what originally will be given will not be given? My guess is – “Very possible”. Why? Because to love is to respect. No matter how good a gift is, if the receiver doesn’t want it, the giver may not give it. Just like God will not force salvation on us because He respects our free will, He may not necessarily bestow a gift that we don’t ask for. Didn’t the Bible say somewhere that we don’t get is because we don’t ask? If what we ask is in accordance with God’s will, we will get what we ask for. But, still, we ought to ask.
