Purpose of the Perpetual Virginity of Mary

To be fair you also never find the words “and Mary remained a virgin forever and had no children”
That is true but what is in Scripture is the Church is the pillar and foundation of truth and Jesus said to take things to the Church, so if that is the case and the Church led by the Holy Spirit said she was an ever virgin, she was an ever virgin.

I just want to make sure we don’t fall into the trap of viewing sex as something that sullies us, as in lots of Evangelical talk on the subject.

This is the ancient tradition.

Joseph already had children from a previous marriage and was significantly older than Mary.

I like the idea of Mother Mary always a virgin…she is the Gold standard of purity.
Yes, but married couples have sex in no way diminishes purity. I think that is the rub for many. If Mary and Joseph did indeed have marital relations, she would still be the gold standard for purity.

I’m with the OP… I accept the Church’s teaching… just haven’t been able to see the value of this one.

Virginity is the greater sacrifice in the long run so it is the higher standard and it more perfectly resembles God and Jesus who both never had carnal relations. The marriage to the Church is spiritual in nature, so its different qualities don’t make for a counterexample.

I disagree that virginity is the greater sacrifice and that it is a higher standard… I know you disagree and the many in Church disagree. I believe that a mother and father of five or six kids struggling through the upbringing of those children is significantly more difficult than a single man or woman abstaining from sex…

The marriage of a man to a woman is spiritual in nature too…

That’s a different thing altogether.

Virginity isn’t lost by being married.

That is one tradition. Some say that tradition began because of this very argument but there is also some tradition that he was young and unmarried and a consecrated virgin.

St. Jerome stated that St. Joseph lived and died as a virgin. So did St. Athanasius and St. Nazianzus say the same thing.

The gospel clearly tells us that Mary and Joseph had sex after Jesus was born.
Where does it clearly STATE that? I haven’t read those words anywhere.
The word until does not always mean something happened after. Jesus said He would be with us until the end of time. Will He stop being with us after then end of time?
But lets assume that Mary remained a virgin and imagine the relationship. How frustrated would Joseph have been, he just got married, his wife had a child that wasn’t his and Mary won’t allow him to love her nor will she love him.
Is this a healthy relationship?
You are looking at it through the eyes of the world and our times, rather than the eyes of God…

There is some tradition that says that Joseph was also a consecrated virgin. There is also an approved apparition of St. Joseph where he appears with the Blessed Mother and he confirms his own purity and deep love for Jesus and Mary.

Is Mary submitting to her husband as the scripture says?
If her husband is being obedient to God and that is what God says for him and her to do, which apparently God did, then absolutely she is being submissive to him.
Thank you for this, first time learning about it:

St. Joseph “Preview”

Sister Mary Mildred wrote not only the messages in her diary but also gave short commentaries. She described how St. Joseph first visited in October 1956 about one week after Our Lady first appeared. On this “preview” she didn’t see him but only heard him tell her:

“It is true, my daughter, that immediately after my conception I was, through the future merits of Jesus and because of my exceptional role of future Virgin-Father, cleansed from the stain of original sin. I was from that moment confirmed in grace and never had the slightest stain on my soul. This is my unique privilege among men.

“My pure heart also was from the first moment of existence inflamed with love for God. Immediately, at the moment when my soul was cleansed from original sin, grace was infused into it in such abundance that, excluding my holy spouse, I surpassed the holiness of the highest angel in the angelic choir.

“My heart suffered with the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Mine was a silent suffering, for it was my special vocation to hide and shield, as long as God willed, the Virgin Mother and Son from the malice and hatred of men.

“The most painful of my sorrows was that I knew beforehand of their passion, yet would not be there to console them.

A fairly recent tradition and a big stretch in my opinion. Mary’s virginity doesn’t necessitate Joseph’s. It’s also historically improbable.

Fairly recent.

No, it dates back to St. Jerome, so that is not so recent. I don’t get the big stretch either. If Mary can become with child without relations with a man and believe that anything is possible with God, I don’t see the impossible here either

A couple could put their children for adoption and a virgin could adopt them so logically since these positions aren’t exclusive it relates to a different aspect. Taking care of children is a different virtue anyways.
It the primary end of marriage is procreation, then, generally speaking, virginity being lost is implied. Of course their are exceptions, but we don’t make rules based on exceptions, we make rules based on norms.
It’s a counterexample and it shows that virginity relates only to the experience of one thing.

And the tradition I mentioned dates tab least two centuries before that.
Perhaps but St.Jerome is not fairly recent and is a doctor of the Church. St. Athanasius also held to the same belief and also a doctor of the Church. I go with that.

I believe the old St. Joseph theory also comes from the protoevanglium of St. James and the most ancient artistic images of St. Joseph portray him as young.

If young men can choose to be priests and choose to remain virginal, why couldn’t St. Joseph?

That seems like a disintegrated way to view it…

Plus that would be an exception rather than the rule.

Generally, speaking a couple that is married goes on to have children. The Church has always taught that the primary end of marriage is procreation. That is why a couple commits to being open to children at their wedding. Marriage, marital relations and having children are intrinsically linked…

The married couple carries a weighty burden.

You had indicated that virginity was the greater sacrifice. Virginity is definitely a sacrifice, but does not seem to carry the same weight or difficulties or responsibilities as a non-virgins in marriage.

Now philandering on the other hand…

I’m only talking in matters of purity not the other virtues.
