I’m hoping someone here can give me some serious feedback about a potential situation that I may be faced with.

I have no money for a funeral and don’t have a cemetery plot. My only relative is in a worse financial position than I’m in, so, cremation may have to be the only viable option available to dispose of my remains. That is if I can afford a cremation.

This being the case, does anyone know the Church’s current stance on cremation?

Stuart

As long as you treat the cremains with the same dignity as you would the body, it is fine.

Check your local Catholic cemetery to find out what they will charge to inter the cremains. You just cannot scatter them or leaven them setting in someone’s house.

Thanks, (name removed by moderator),

Could you elaborate on the second point of your post, please?

Have a chat with your pastor; he may be able to arrange a burial for you. One of my priest-friends used to be in charge of a cemetery and he used to arrange discreet funerals and burials for people with no money.

So long as the cremains are properly interred, no worries.
You might look into natural burial, where one doesn’t require embalming and the sites are in a meadow with a simple stone…literally a big rock, as here:

Some people are buried wrapped in a favorite quilt, a cardboard “coffin” or a basket.
You have options.
Cremation does not prevent you from having a funeral Mass,

This shall be my Mausoleum.

And this shall be my coffin.

I’m in the same situation and interested in everyone’s answers.

Interred where? Do I have to buy a burial plot I can’t afford?
Talk to your local Catholic Parish. Some parishes have a columbarium on site, others have them in either a Catholic cemetery or a public cemetery. We cannot tell you the cost for that because we do not know the local specifics where you live. Ashes do need to be buried or put into a columbarium. If you cannot afford that, the church can help you.

They have smaller plots for cremains. They don’t cost the same, but they must be buried in consecrated ground.
They may NOT be scattered.

My reasoning for having a Mausoleum and coffin is that on the Last Day I’ll simply throw open the lid and walk outside. 😃 Whereas everyone else will be trying to dig themselves out or need reassembled. It’ll be a most entertaining resurrection 🍿🍿🍿

Catholic cemeteries at parishes are very reasonable. I am buying a plot for Joe and myself at my parish. Every time someone pays me to play a funeral I put the money on it. It finally occurred to me that we might not be able to fly either one of us back to Ireland to be buried with his family, and my parents are in the National cemetery, so I can’t be buried near them anyway.

Fear not! I shall pay to have you all exhumed and we’ll have a CAF Mausoleum. It’ll be most entertaining 😅

Thank you! This is something I didn’t know and am not sure I like.

I’ll have to somehow find or save money and make arrangements ahead of time to pay for it because my atheist, anti-Catholic sister will not honor what I want otherwise.

I hear you. Our devout sister passed last year, and my sister that lived near her didn’t honor ANY of her wishes. I still sometimes cry over it, but it was out of my hands, Poor woman.
Seriously, pre pay if you can for whatever small thing you want. I have friends that have learned that if you tell the Funeral Director that your life insurance is $50,000…you funeral will suddenly cost nearly that.
Pre-pay, don’t get talked into anything. We have people that send us a check for $5 a week for their plot. We don’t care.

Who brought the moonshine???
I’m great at cards, just warnin ya.
