What makes a memorial different from a feast day?

“Feast day” is often a generic term used for any day celebrating the life or aspect of Christ or one of the saints. This does have the potential to get confusing when one of the ranks in the calendar is a “Feast”

Tomorrow’s celebration is a “Memorial” not a “Feast”. The difference between the two is usually in the texts for the Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass. Feasts usually have Proper (special) texts for the Mass, and special antiphons, psalms, etc. for the Office of Readings, Lauds and Vespers in the Divine Office. If they don’t, then the take all these texts from the Common of Saints. The Mass a of “Feast” also uses the “Glory to God”; the Mass of a memorial usually does not.

Memorials usually do not have Proper texts aside from a prayer for either the Mass or the Divine Office. Some special memorials, like tomorrow’s, do however, have Proper Mass texts.
