** I’ve done the thirteen blessed souls novena in the past, and it has been gracefully answered. But what I didn’t realize is - I hadn’t done the “13 Our Father’s and 13 Hail Mary’s” after the end of the 13 blessed soul novena which is clearly written at the bottom of the novena in question (and which I missed).

Is it compulsory to abide by it? I missed it but even then, I received a blessing. But now that I’ve realized my mistake, I couldn’t possibly miss it if I were to start the novena.**

Just do it now that you know about it … failing to know about it the first time around is never a problem.

Novenas aren’t magic spells; if you honestly forget part of it then God doesn’t refuse to hear your prayer.

We usually do try to follow the structure of a novena because it’s a discipline, like doing 10 push-ups rather than just running aimlessly around in the yard for 10 minutes. Both things are exercise but some people benefit from the more structured exercise.

As Katherine said, now that you’re aware of the extra prayers, just do them in the future.

Novenas give me peace of mind more than anything, and yes, I’m aware of the fact that they’re not intended to be used as a “magical solution” .

Btw, do I recite the “Hail Mary’s " and " Hail Father’s” 13 times each hour we do the Thirteen Blessed Souls prayer(in the nine hour format) ? Or at the end - ninth hour, after we finish the intended novena? 🙂

Thank you!!!

Also, I saw in an article that this novena is done for thirteen hours. I’m confused. What actually is the correct way - nine or thirteen hours? Sorry, it hasn’t been that long since I chose to walk the path walked by Jesus. So, I am kind of “novice” who is plundering everything to explore and get to know everything associated with Catholicism. Thank you and God bless.

Another question. It’s written that the recital of Our Father, and Hail Mary is to be repeated 13 times (after finishing the 13 blessed soul novena) for 13 consecutive days. But I intend to do the special prayer in a day ( nine hours). So, what’s that, would you kindly clarify it to me pls? I won’t be doing the prayer for 13 days (or nine) so, is it okay to NOT recite the Our Father, and Hail Mary for 13 days? Thank you and God bless.

Novenas are a private devotion.

You are free to adapt any novena and pray it in the manner you prefer.

Like I said, it’s like using an exercise program out of a book. If you buy a book with 10 calisthenics to do every day for a week, you might choose to do all the exercises just the way they are in the book. If you are doing them with a group, the group might choose to follow the book exactly.

However, if you are just doing the exercises by yourself, it’s okay to pick and choose certain ones to do, and to change them the want you want. The important thing is that you’re exercising.

Same goes for prayer. God is happy you are praying. He doesn’t care how you structure your personal, private prayer. You can say these prayers how you like and you can leave out the Our Fathers and Hail Marys, or say twice as many. Your choice.
