Question about a Catholic Bible

A friend of mine recently showed me a new Bible that he purchased. Its called the "Catholic Answers Bible… Have any of you seen it or used it? Your opinions please?

It has in it pages that explain the whys and wherefores of our faith and the scriptural justifications. I only had a couple of minutes to look at it, then I had to “hit the road”.

It looks like one drawback is that its based on the NAB, which I have.

Looks like I need to get two…one of them a DR.

There was also a version of this Bible in the RSV-CE translation. It’s a little harder to find, but well worth it.
 
I bought this Bible for my son when he was Confirmed. Since he was going to a public high school I wanted him to have resources when other youngsters asked him questions about his faith.
 
an excellent choice for a study bible, esp. for a confirmation or college student. everyone should have one NAB bible in their library if they are going to be working with for instance RCIA or other lectionary-based instruction, faith-sharing or prayer groups. (or whatever translation is approved for liturgy in your country). DR is unfortunately inaccessable to many modern readers, but a wonderful bible for devotional use for those who love its language style. serious students should also have RSV-CE and a 1966 Jerusalem Bible. If you are at a study level to consider orginal language resources they are very expensive but available on-line, a better option.

I am finding that I have an increasing desire for knowledge regarding the Bible and the Catholic Faith. I don’t know if its because I am getting into that “autumn phase” of life, or what…but I have a very strong inner desire…like a “gut feeling” of the kind I can’t ignore. And yes, I am something of a “revert” to the Church.

in this stage, the best bible is the one that “reads right” to you, that is comfortable to read, use and hold, any approved translation that is in language and style most attractive to you, and everything about the book, weight, paper, typestyle, cover etc. should be “user-friendly” for you. If you join a formal study group, also buy the version they are all using, preferably one you can write in and underline and stick tabbies on. I just handed a friend and long-time catechist a gift of the new RSV-CE, the larger one with the nice brown leather cover stamped in gold, to replace his worn blue Ignatius press paperback with all the pages falling out, held in place with rubber bands. He is thrilled.

I think it is unfortunate that the translation is not my favorite one, but I would still buy it, if only for Dave’s contributions.

I don’t mean the book is inaccessible, I mean the language and style is inaccessible to many modern readers. so is the KJV and other translations that retain their 16th-17th c linguistic roots. it the reader has to struggle with each sentence it does not aid devotion or study.

I think that with a little time allowed to gain familiarity, this is an issue readily resolved. I have found that havig a dictionary within reach greatly enhances my biblical reading. I think that the DR, while initialy confusing, is acually much clearer and better transmits conceptual thought,
 
I don’t recommend the Catholic Answers Bible at all. I rather have the inserts together as a separate booklet or in the back of the bible with the same paper the rest of the bible is made from. The inserts prevent you from quickly flipping through the pages of the bible when you want to look something up because the inserts are thicker card stock paper spread throughout the whole bible. This makes using this bible a real pain. The idea was nice though it wasn’t what I was looking for. I was looking for an Apologetics bible that was similier to the Catholic Youth Bible, with Catholic defending articles on the bible pages themselves near the relevant verses.

I bought my family and me 4 Catholic Youth Bibles NRSV so we can read from the same book together as a family. I like it a lot because it has clear sub headings, difficult to pronounce words are written with pronunciation marks, 8 reading plans, the back has lots of “where to find it” study aides, and lots more nice features, though the ones I mention are the ones I like the best. It also has lots of articles throughout (some good, some bad). This Catholic Youth Bible will probably replace the Catholic Answers Bible as my full time bible until I find a better bible for apologetics with either commentary on the bottom of the pages or something.
