Question about a Catholic magazine

Hi,
I ordered a magazine to try and see if I liked it. The magazine is “U.S. Catholic.” At first glance, it seemed like a true Roman Catholic magazine. Then, in the “Letters” section, a reader responded to something the editor wrote in the November 2005 issue, “Some may argue that worship of Christ in the host leads us to service, but I don’t see the connection.” Now, this quote was from the editor regarding Eucharistic Adoration and the practice of devotions. I have not read the whole article, but this quote leads me to wonder about the magazine. I really hesitate to order a subscription if this magazine feels the need to call into question something as traditional and spiritual as Eucharistic Adoration.

Any ideas?:confused:

U.S. Catholic is a liberal Catholic magazine with a lot of focus on social justice, women’s lib, et al. Sometimes it has a bit of value to offer in perspective, but typically it is just a good amount of generally leftist Catholic jabber lite with a average Catholic/family appeal in presentation. I wouldn’t recommend it to the average Catholic. Or as one commentaor once said, "Why don’t they just give them rat poison and get it over with?’
 
I suggest that you place your copy of “US Catholic” on the floor and back away as quickly as possible. It’s not too late to save yourself.

Mom got it for years. Perhaps coincidentally, those were the years when she started transitioning from being a bible study leading, marriage encounter paticipating, NFP practising, obedient catholic to being a divorced, professional church employee with an M Div., card carrying VOTF member and women’s ordination advocate.

The magazine surely didn’t cause it. But it’s editorial positions and hostility to the legitimate teaching authority of the church sure didn’t help.
 
I used to get US Catholic back when I first rejoined the Church, before I fully understood that you cannot pick and choose the doctrines to follow. I no longer get it and have recycled all my issues (i don’t have a burn pile…darn suburbs:p ).
 
Sadly, some Catholic periodicals that were originally quite orthodox gave way over the years to that 60s dissident spirit masking itself as progress… From as far back as I can remember, my mother has subscribed to St. Anthony and I always thought of it as a good Catholic publication. However, on recent visits to her house I’ve noticed some very questionable things in there.

Yes, this is one magazine that I am not going to subscribe to. No way.

Yes, my family subscribes to St. Anthony magazine as well. I really love the magazine, but I, too, have found a few things here and there that leave me wondering…

And that one has actually probablly improved a bit in the last few years.

That said, I do believe that this question gets at a bigger concern. There would seem to be a need for a Catholic publication which has somewhat lighter fare than the heavy apologetics and culture war type stuff which typifies the more sucessful ones which learn more right than left. How can the people who read stuff like U.S. Catholic, Catholic Digest, St. Anthony, Ligiourian be appealed to at their own level while being given something a bit more rich and substantively solid in the faith?
 
I too, had a trial subscription when I first became Catholic. I went through This Rock so fast that I wanted more. I cancelled after two issues. I was glad I never gave them a dime.
 
I have been getting it free for about six months now. Each time I get it I glance through a few articles and then it ends up in the wastebasket!
