A friend of mine has been a Catholic since he was baptized, but has recently been participating in the Episcopal Church and recently participated in a “reception” (not 100% sure what that actually means) when their Bishop was in town. Just wondering what I should say to my friend, and I’m also wondering if what he participated in was an excommunicatable offense? (From the perspective of the Catholic Church, of course. )

We cannot know what you mean by “participating” in the Episcopal Church or what you mean by “a reception.” It is no sin to occasionally attend events at an Episcopal Church. I assume that you are getting this information from conversation with him. Has your friend been going to Catholic Mass? Leaving the Catholic Church for the Episcopal Church is a serious matter, if that is what he is considering.

He has made his choice and clearly right for him.

He did tell me that he did this, and I haven’t seen him at Catholic Mass. I was told by him that he took communion in the Episcopal Church which is wrong and according to that link he committed what I’m understanding to be a sin that can result in excommunication. I’m praying for him to return to the true Church. Not only that, the Episcopal Church is in decline and could close down entirely in our lifetimes if its current rate of decline remains constant (we’re both 22) so I really don’t know what to tell him because he’s a great friend of mine.

NO! to your last question, BUT he needs desperately to talk to his Pastor about his concerns. Obviously there has been a break down in his Catechesis, and he either does not understand the Catholic Faith or has chosen to deny it, at least in parts.

I OFFER BTW, a TOTALLY FREE OF ALL COST CATHOLIC HOME STUDY, E-MAILED COURSE AS A SUPPLEMENT TO RCIA, which due to time constraints is unable to much more than introduce our faith. {I co-taught RCIA for 3 years}

One Lesson is mailed each week and I answer all faith questions personally too:thumbsup:

PRAY much for this friend, and Do suggest he talk to hos pastor ASAP about what he is doing and doubting.

God Bless you
