Question about a missal

Somebody donated a St. Joseph Daily Missal to the library, and I was wondering if it’s an up to date one before I bought it…I’m thinking it is but I’m not sure

It says it’s a “Completely Revised Edition Including New Mass Rubrics and the New Holy Week Liturgy” and the again it says, “In accord with the New Code of Rubrics effective Jan 1, 1961” and it’s copyrighted 1961. So does this have all the right info from Vatican II, then?

Thanks! I would like to know before I attempt to use this at Mass myself (I’ve been using missalettes), and before I loan it to friends, if they happen to be curious.

Vatican II didn’t start until 1962 so this missal is definitely pre-VII.

Hi Holly, if you are going to use it for the Novus Ordo Mass, you would need the New St Joseph Weekday Missal for weekdays. It comes in two volumes. Right now, Volume 1, Advent to Pentecost would be the one to use. Both volumes cost around 20.00 each.

The New St Joseph Sunday Missal 2008 is the one you need for Sunday. One volume for the whole year. It sells for around 3.00.

If you are going to use it for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (the old latin mass), in a diocese parish, you need a 1962 Daily Missal. You can see one here…

These missals cover weekdays as as well as Sundays.

I think I’d hold off buying a Missal until the new translation is released – in another 18-20 months according to some members of the ICEL translation team. There will be major changes at that time.

Using it might not be a good idea, but there are missal collectors out there who would pay a pretty penny for such a missal. Why not put it on eBay and donate the proceeds to the library?
