I had a question regarding absolution;

if someone has a lot of sins to confess and forgets to mention some or it would take very long, etc. When the Priest absolves the penitent are they absolved of all sins or just those confessed.

My concern is that I’m about to be Baptized tomorrow :), and I probably was not Baptized as a baby (only dedicated) but there is a small chance I was. I am not receiving a conditional Baptism, so Theologically, all my sins should be washed away.

My question is, when I go to confess a week or two down the road, I will probably feel the need to confess my whole history of sins to the Priest, even the stuff I have already confessed to God personally. If I miss some things, or time doesn’t permit, when the Priest gives absolution I wanted to know if everything was absolved or not?

thanks,

sorry in advance if this is a duplicate thread:o

First of all, keep in mind that only mortal sins need to be confessed and absolved. It is good to also confess venial sins but not required.

If you do your best to confess your mortal sins and forget one, it is absolved anyway. If you remember it then confess it the next time you go.

Remember that confession is a sacrament of God’s love and mercy. Be open to the graces of the sacrament.

If you may have been baptized as a baby…but are not sure…they would be doing a conditional baptism it would seem…(for you may have in fact been baptized according your post)

…if you were in fact baptized as a child…any baptism you receive will **not **wash away your mortal sins for it will not be an actual baptism (one can only be baptized once…and additional ones are never valid baptisms)

So it would seem that if you have any mortal sins…and you may have been baptized as a baby …you will need to confess any mortal sins before confirmation and Holy Communion tomorrow night…so it seems you need to talk again to the Priest right away…give him a call!

sorry to throw this at you at the last moment!

But it is important.

No, don’t be sorry. I asked the RCIA director when I saw that there was no conditional Baptism next to my nam she said that the paper I filled out were looked at and there was insufficient evidence or something like that where as in the case of another, there was more of a reason to believe he had been Baptised.

The fact that it is *possible * that you were validly baptized as a baby…means that it is *possible * that whatever baptism happens tomorrow --WILL NOT BE A BAPTISM for you will have already been baptized…and thus it would seem that you will need to confess any mortal sins prior to Confirmation and Communion.

For ONLY if you were not already baptized…would your mortal sins be washed away tomorrow…

one can only receive ONE valid baptism. Any water poured after that will not be a baptism…and not have the effect of baptism…(only the first one ‘works’ by the Holy Spirit…any after that are not real…)

…where one is not sure if one was validly baptized or not…one would be conditionally baptized…prob in private and then confess ones mortal sins (at least) …and then at the vigil be confirmed and receive Holy Communion…

quote…

If there is reason to doubt whether a person’s baptism was valid (or whether the person was baptized at all), then the candidate will be given a conditional baptism (one with the form, “. . . if you are not already baptized, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”).

“If conditional baptism . . . seems necessary, this must be celebrated privately rather than at a public liturgical assembly of the community and with only those limited rites which the diocesan bishop determines. The reception into full communion should take place later at the Sunday Eucharist of the community” (NSC 37).

akin to this will be someone who thinks they may or may not have been baptized

From the following…but not need to read whole thing…the part that applies is quoted above

From the Code of Canon Law:

Can. 869 §1. If there is a doubt whether a person has been baptized or whether baptism was conferred validly and the doubt remains after a serious investigation, baptism is to be conferred conditionally.

so it would seem that they would baptize you conditionally during the day tomorrow and privately…and then hear your confession…then confirm you etc at the vigil.

ok,

my parents now say they are sure it was a dedication. I admittedly, struggle w/ scrupulosity. She says it was a “United Missionary Church” and I don’t think they baptise infants.

Ah…well if you were not baptized…and this is certain…no problem. You will be baptized…and new life will begin!

(Of course …you can touch base still with the Priest on it…so you will not scruple about it :)…they may have looked up the community and found that they do not baptize infants …)

Some cool readings for you in your prep for the vigil!
