Not sure where to post.

I have a question about anointing the sick, my question is this I have a condition that is a neurological one i know that our major hospital (trauma center etc.) Has a priest on staff my parish has requested that anyone who is at the hospital in Portland Oregon request a priest who is on duty at the hospital, now i am unable to take the blood or body when I am that sick as every thing that goes down comes right back up in my case how could I have the anointing of the sick in this situation?

I’m sorry you are so ill. Praying for you. 🙏

Reception of the sacrament (Anointing of the Sick) does not include receiving Communion. You would not need to ingest anything.

The others above have answered; just chiming in to add my prayers for you - I, too, have neurological and GI issues that accompany a rare illness I deal with (not saying it’s the same - just empathizing). May God bless you.

I received the anointing of the sick when I was in the hospital when I was younger and it just involved the priest speaking and using the oil to bless me on my forehead. Worry not, although receiving Jesus in the Eucharist is a beautiful gift, it is not required with this sacrament. Praying for you !

The Eucharist can be received as a tiny drop of the Blood that will be absorbed orally rather than swallowed … . and as noted by others,

Can. 1004 §1 The anointing of the sick can be administered to any member of the faithful who, having reached the use of reason, begins to be in danger of death by reason of illness or old age.

§2 This sacrament can be repeated if the sick person, having recovered, again becomes seriously ill or if, in the same illness, the danger becomes more serious.

In one of the things that drives many RC around here stark raving mad, the threshold is far lower in many Eastern churches.

After the Holy Wednesday liturgy, we, to paraphrase Ray Stevens, administe this sacrament to everyone present, "whether they need it or not ". . .

in fact, we all need it for healing of soul (and in our phrasing, it’s “healing of soul and body”)

It is common for the Gospel to be held over the head of the anointed bya couple of taller servers (or other tall men . . . one year I went up front to relieve a shorter elderly server . . .)
