Question about "behold thy son" & Jewish custom

First of all, just want to say I have a nasty head cold so I hope my question makes sense.

I’ve read where a Catholic said that the ancient Jewish custom was for the care of the mother to be given to the youngest son in the event of the father’s death, and* not the oldest*. This being another fact showing that Jesus had no siblings since Jesus was already assuming the role of caregiver to Mary opposed to the youngest male “sibling”.

**Does anyone know if this youngest son rule is true? And if so, can anyone show me where I can find the info on this Jewish custom? **I’ve searched but everything I’ve found so far says the oldest son was given the role of “head of household” at the father’s death (nothing specific as to who was to actually “care” for the mother).

However, it seems since Jesus gave John the responsibilty to care for Mary, and John was the youngest apostle, this in a sense further makes the case for the youngest son and not the oldest.

I don’t see how this is relevant. If Jesus’ brothers were older, then (unless you’re going to deny the words of Scripture) they were certainly not Mary’s children.

I’ve never heard this business about the youngest son either. It sounds fishy.

I don’t think John being given the care of Mary had anything to do with his age–it was because he was particularly close to Jesus.
