Hi. I had two questions about the validity of blessings.

I recently attended a Baccalaureate Mass in which the priest asked the entire congregation to extend their hands over the graduates to bless them. The priest read the blessing, so I am assuming this is valid, but is it appropriate?

After that, the students were asked to put their hands over their parents and one of the students (NOT a priest) read a blessing. Is this blessing valid?

I was always under the assumption that only a priest could offer a blessing?

Thanks!

  1. It was the priests blessing bestowed on them not the congregations. When this happens where I’m at I do not participate except to pray silently for them.
  2. No
Anybody can always pray for another person, I may also extend a hand or place a hand on someone i’m praying for or with. But it’s a prayer, not a blessing and it’s done privately, not within a public liturgy…
