Do all Byzantine Liturgies invite the children up as the priests reads the Gospel and then each child is invited to reverence the Gospel by kissing it? Just wondering…

Some do. My Ruthenian parish does and half the parishioners or more are children. I was at a Melkite Church that did as well.

I have seen it in Ruthenian, Ukrainian, and Melkite parishes. My own parish doesn’t do it.

It is a really beautiful sight. I saw it done in a Ruthenian Church and just thought it might be a tradition of some Eastern Churches. Where I live now there are no Eastern Catholic churches, it is a real loss. 😔

No.

It’s the sort of thing that would vary from parish to parish.

Some parishes do allow parishioners to venerate the Book of the Gospels, as the deacon takes it throughout the whole Church. But it’s a local tradition, not an universal rule.

Interesting! Personally, I’ve never seen it.
It’s a wonderful practice on multiple levels: the involvement of the children, the emphasis, and, by no means least, it gives the children a chance to move around during the liturgy before having to sit still again!

Some parishes do, most only let the altar boys kiss the Gospel.

In 2008, my parents, a friend and I went to a parish in upstate NY. We sat about 3 pews from the front. At the Little Entrance, the priest allowed the 8 altar boys (isn’t that wonderful? ☺️) to kiss the Gospel, and then he brought it to us! The four of us were able to kiss the Gospel. My father was so overcome, he broke down and cried for joy.
