As you know, the archdiocese here has warned that if the DC government passes a bill recognizing gay marriages, Catholic Charities will have to suspend it’s services. According to a spokesperson for the archdiocese, this is in part because the church will be forced to provide spousal benefits for the partners of it’s gay employees. A catholic organization cannot ethically do so, so they will be forced to shut down.

My question is, why hasn’t the issue of spousal benefits come up before? Surely there are other Catholic charitable organizations operating in places where gay marriage is legal, right?

Lots of views, but no responses. I guess the question is better phrased this way: Can a catholic organization ethically provide spousal benefits to gay partnerships?
