My friend’s parents got a divorce many months back and it made me really upset for the family. I was wondering if someone could explain Catholic rules on divorce?
They’ve been married for a long time, a rather traditional Catholic family, with 8 kids together and it was so sudden when she told me. She said they got counseling and tried not to fight around the kids but it still happened.
I guess I had thought that they could separate and perhaps divorce but they couldn’t date or marry again unless there was an annulment but now I’m not so sure. Is divorce EVER allowed for Catholics if there aren’t reasons that the marriage wouldn’t have been sacramental in the first place? I know some people say that not even adultery (I am not saying this happened) will warrant a divorce and promise to life celibately. I’m really confused.
