Hey all,

at the Parish I go to Confession, they have this sort of “Confessional suite” where there are three rooms, two penitants on the outer ones and the Priest in the middle. The problem is the screen and the walls of the Priests room are hardly sound proof. So when waiting for Confession I can usually hear a good deal of the other penitants Confession. Any ideas on what to do?

I would say that you must point this out to the priest. Perhaps since he is always sitting in the middle he isn’t aware of the problem. If by chance he is aware and will not rectify the situation you should elevate it to your bishop.

And remember in the meantime that you are bound by the seal of the confessional not to reveal anything you’ve heard of others confessions to anyone else, not even the priest.

Our cathedral here has a similar arrangement - sometimes I can hear a little, a very little, of what the priest says, but never enough that I’ve been able to make sense of it and certainly never anything of the other person’s confession

The cathedral I used to go to also had that, but the problem we had was being able to hear from outside the confessional. Eeek! Once I was in a line and as soon as the person inside the confessional started talking VERY LOUDLY we all took 3 automatic steps backwards. I think someone started humming. 😛

I’m usually pretty paranoid about people hearing me in the confessional. Once I came out and three people were staring at me, and I was like uh oh.

Our confessional room is nice, it’s not too big, not too small and it’s so comfortable in there. The walls have like this fluffy carpet like thing to sound proof. When I’m outside the confessional I can hear people are talking but can’t make out what’s being said, so luckily our confessional room is fairly well done.

The priest at my parish solved that very problem by placing a small fan just outside the door of the confessional. It’s just loud enough to cover any voices, but quiet enough that it doesn’t disturb anyone trying to do pennance.

Same thing…I plug my ears while I am waiting and am not ashamed to discreetly plug one ear ( the ear facing the confessional) and chatter my teeth or hum quietly while I am waiting outside the confessional…problem solved. I don’t want to hear anyone else’s confession and this way works great.

Now I thought that I was weird but I do exactly the same thing!!👍 People probably think that I am practicing for my next singing audition.😃
