Question about Confession

Well, I have never really been taught the proper way to go to Confession. Having been a catechumen versus a candidate, I didn’t have to go to Confession before being baptized this past Easter Vigil and needless to say, I was never really taught the “how to”. The importance yes, but not the how to.

At any rate, I pretty much have it figured out. I take my little guide with me every time I go and everything works out nicely.

Except one thing. After I receive absolution, the priest will say “Go in peace”… And each time he says this, I have the greatest urge to say “Thanks be to God”, but I do not know if I’m supposed to. I will usually just say “Thank you, Father” before leaving.

Is there a certain response that I am supposed to make upon leaving?
 
Ya know – I think I have actually said that too. It just makes sense!

I don’t know that a particular response is “called for,” other than to go out and do your penance as soon as you reasonably can, but I don’t think “Thanks be to God” could possibly be wrong here.

Not that I know of. I just say “Thank you, Father”. But sometimes I revert to my old Protestant habits and say “Thank you, Sir”, then quickly correct myself. :o
 
There’s no set response that I ever heard of. You can just say, “Thanks, Father. Have a good day.”
 
i was in the same boat this year, vittorio. i usually just say “thank you father” too, and the priest usually smiles and says “God bless you.”
btw- isn’t it a great sacrament? i really enjoy confession.
 
At some point, you may come across a priest who says at the end, “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.” The answer to that is, “His mercy endures forever.”

I usually answer, “Thank you, Father,” to “Go in peace.”
