Question about consuming the sacred blood

Alright I have a Catholic Friend, who thinks that sometimes when people consume the blood Of Christ in the presence of Wine, some people are self communicating. This would be bad if this is the case, I’m pretty sure that we can’t self communicate our self’s, it must be done by a ordained minister, aka deacon or priest or someone who is appointed by that ordained minister to distribute communion.

But the idea is that becuase we are taking the chalice and then giving it to ourselves, making it self communication.

is my friend on or is there an explanation that makes this ok.

If you’re talking about someone taking the chalice off the altar and consuming it, then you’re friend would be correct that that is self-communication. And you’re correct that doing that is not allowed unless you are a priest or bishop.

If someone, ordinary or extraordinary minister, hand you the cup to drink from, that isn’t self-communication and is allowed, provided all the other norms are being followed.

It would help if if you could clarify. Do you mean that you are picking up the chalice off of the altar or a table and drinking from it?
Then yes that is self communication and is not allowed.

The key is whether someone “gives” you the cup, or you “take” the cup yourself without someone “giving” it to you.

Some years ago, our pastor had a habit of telling the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to basically help themselves to the hosts and cup on the altar. I did a little research and approached him humbly and pointed out that this probably wasn’t right, that it was “self-communication.” He thanked me and at Mass that day, pointed out that I had brought that up (I wish he hadn’t singled me out), and they were going to change procedures now to do things right. But, I guess it worked out in the end. We stopped self-communicating.

If you are talking about receiving the chalice from a Priest/Deacon/EM and taking a sip, then no. To me, this action would be the same as if one were to receive the Host in the hand. Technically, you place it in your own mouth, yet that isn’t considered self-communication either.

Just to clarify for those who may not know, even though Catholics refer to the consecrated bread as the “Body of Christ” and to the consecrated wine as the “Blood of Christ,” either form of the Eucharist contains the sacred Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

You may be interested to know that in many countries the faithful are still not offered the chalice.

In my old parish we weren’t because we couldn’t afford it. Even though it was just a local parish church, it served a congregation of about 4000 (just on ordinary Sundays) and it was simply too expensive.
