Do only bishops wear that? It’s really nice and I would like to wear something like that. Do they make something like that for laymen to wear?

Please, forgive me if this question is sacrilegious. I don’t know about the symbolism behind this necklace-icon-object.

Yes, only Bishops wear those. Priests wear pectoral crosses which in the Latin Church is reserved only to Bishops. Deacons don’t get to wear anything.

It is called a “Panagia”, which is also a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary meaning “All Holy”. While a very visible symbol of episcopal office in Eastern Christianity, it is worn by bishops as a reminder that they must strive to be pure of heart, in imitation of the Mother of God.

Although it would be considered somewhat disrespectful to wear one as a lay person, there are many medallions of the Panagia that are popularly worn and would be utterly appropriate as a similar reminder.

Only bishops get to where those. Besides, why would laypeople even *want *to wear it? It looks extremely pretentious and over-zealous on laymen. If you want to show your Christianity, don’t do it by wearing pectorals or crosses of gold, but by your charity and love for your neighbours.

They do get to wear riassa and podriasniki, stikhar, orarion and epimanikia; I wouldn’t say they don’t get to wear “anything” as a literal translation of that might raise some eyebrows or cause some serious liturgical distractions…
