Hello all,
So I have a question about Ephesians. I’m having a conversation about the relationship between faith and works and am wonder how the previous verses point toward baptism (verses 1-6?).
Thanks,
ZP

I was speaking of Ephesians 2:8 and heard the previous verses, 1-6 or so refer to baptism and was wondering how?

Well Baptism is part of the way that we were “made alive” …by grace. And Faith of course too is part of this. One repents and has Faith…and is then baptized.

One is justified by Faith and Baptism…not “works”. It is a gift.

See too Romans 6: 1-11 Paul speaks there of Baptism.

I’m not sure if Paul is referring only to Baptism here, but he is certainly referring to the sacraments of the Church. In verse ten he specifies that there are good works that God prepared for us to walk in, and in verse 13-18 he explains how Jesus came to fulfill the Law by joining it to himself and emptying it of commandments by decree, talks about saving grace and how the gentiles are no longer strangers but citizens with the Saints in the kingdom of God (the heavens and earth are joined through this new covenant, which comes from the Law). Recall that Jesus tells us that He didn’t come to abolish the Law, he came to fulfill it. Paul is telling us about the importance of walking with Christ in the sacraments and is distinguishing these from the works of the Law, which were decrees that men carried out and provided no saving Grace.
