If you need prayer during this time, I will be glad to offer it up for you.
That would be great! Please pray that I would serve and love God with my whole heart, and that I would grow in holiness and be pleasing to Him.

Greetings SherylPatton,

I will be very glad to do so. This is a good prayer to be praying for you. If you ever need prayers or want to talk, feel free to send me a Personal Message.

God Bless.

I struggle with gluttony, and I don’t want food to be an idol in my life. I was thinking about doing the fast that the Carmelites do from Sept 14 to Easter, excluding Sunday and feast days. It would be 2 snacks and dinner.

Do you think I can do it? I don’t want to make a commitment and then fail God. This is a sin that’s pretty entrenched in my life, and I’m not Catholic yet (RCIA), so I wouldn’t have the Blessed Sacrament to help me. I would like to please God and grow in holiness, but I’m unsure. Thank you for your prayers and advice
Ah Sheryl,

God bless you. If you decide to do that on your own, remember that you cannot bind yourself under pain of sin. It might be a good resolution, but we wouldn’t want you thinking that if you faltered, it was a sin. Your desire and intention is already pleasing to God.

I tend to think you ought to resolve something less rigorous while you are in RCIA. But the best advice was already given and that was to seek for priestly advice. Maybe you are a glutton. But I also know that in our society, there is a tendency toward guilt about overweight that doesn’t necessarily mean that we are always sinning in our eating habits. We just feel bad about being overweight. Anyway you go, thank God for the actual graces that are already yours, and the sacramental graces that will be available to help you sort this things out by next year at this time.

G’Day Sheryl,

You’re getting lots of good advice here. I’m just starting on the same sort of regimen, though I’m also in the gym five days a week.

Anyway, I found my inspiration in the earliest Church, through the Didache. You can find it at:

earlychristianwritings.com/didache.html

(I recommend the Roberts-Donaldson translation, but the Kirsopp-Lake is also good.)

Chapter 8 includes some fascinating practical instructions on fasting and prayer. It has already helped me a great deal and, over time, has helped me become stronger in my faith and (hopefully) a better Christian. I hope that it may do the same for you!👍

Good luck with your quest! Peace be with you.
