I was drawn to St. Eustachius when it was time for my confirmation, with his life being an example for me of how one should remain faithful despite all adversary within current human society.

But reading through his biographies later on people started saying that there was no evidence for his existence so it makes me unsure, and that he was just a legend. Always viewed him as a real tangible individual in history but this uncertainty is driving me crazy.

I had chosen St. Matthew pretty easily; he was a tax collector, I have been involved in that business (preparing them) since I learned from my father at 12 or 13 years old. He was one of the 4 evangelists, which spoke both to my desire to teach and (in my mind, due to his placement in scripture) satisfied my Protestant background. I later learned of St. Teresa of Avila whose feast is on my birthday and that it’s tradition for your birthday saint to be your patron. It took me a while to learn about her and “get over” the notion of a female patron saint for a male. (The silly things we think as teenagers!)

Now, I call upon both daily, together with St. Joseph to be my guide as a husband and father, and our local patrons and those with meaning to me: St. Meinrad, St. Benedict, St. Francis Xavier, St. Theodora Guerin, and Our Lady of Providence - and occasionally others.

Why not? It is a good way to learn more of a saint during the coming year. Writing the names of the saints on pieces of paper and then pick one gives the same result. I have used it for a few years. This year I got St Peter the Apostle. Some convents have the tradition of “picking” a new saint for the coming year to get to know.

I used that saints’ name picker last year. I got St. Francis de Sales who was famous for converting Calvinists, so I decided to pray to him to intercede in my trying to convert my Presbyterian husband.

After praying daily for his intercession in this matter (along with praying to several other saints to also help), one day I saw a church pop up in my Masstimes app that I had never heard of before. It was a historic church and only had Masses on certain days, also it is a ways away. I decided to go there for morning Mass as it was Saturday. It was a really beautiful church, it was called “St. Francis de Sales”.

While attending Mass at St. Francis de Sales Church , I prayed rather impatiently for something to happen soon with my husband’s conversion because it did not appear that anything was happening. I asked St. Francis de Sales’ intercession as usual. That night my husband passed away suddenly and a priest told me it was quite likely he “converted” upon death.

It was an odd coincidence as I have never been to that church before or since and I have never seen any other church that just happened to be named after St. Francis de Sales.

This year I got St. Guy of Anderlicht. I see he is the patron saint against rabies. I hope I don’t have to invoke him for that.

I’ve used that generator before. I got St. Thomas the first time and St. Paul the second time. Nothing wrong with it. I think it is a great way to learn more about saints. Just try not to be superstitious about it.
