Hello,

My wife, who was baptized Catholic but wasn’t raised in the Church, is attending RCIA now. We recently had our marriage convalidated, so she was able to make her first confession. My question is this: can she receive Holy Communion now, or must she wait until her RCIA program is completed and she has received Confirmation?

I would love for her to be able to partake in the Body and Blood of Christ as soon as possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
PJY86

She should be asking the pastor of the parish. Its up to him if she’s ready.

How is someone ready to receive communion? 🤷 Are the infants in the Eastern Catholic churches “ready” to receive?

In most cases when an adult is being brought into the church, confirmation is required before receiving communion.

That’s a question for the pastor, not for us, since we have no authority to make a decision.

Typically adults receive First Communion and Confirmation at the same Mass. I don’t know if the pastor can override that.

Obviously this person is entering the Roman Catholic Church, and is subject to her disciplines and traditions. In the Roman Church, a cetain amount of understanding and belief in the Real Presence of the Eucharist asked of the communicant under normal circumstances. That is why they delay first Communion for children.

The wife will not be Communed until the priest determines she understand what the Eucharist is and shows a belief in the Real Presence.

I believe the OP noted the individual was baptized Catholic and is, therefore, not entering the Church but is already Catholic.

Thanks for all the replies. IrishAM is correct in pointing out that she is, indeed, Catholic. This is what makes me think that there is no real reason that she couldn’t take communion. However, I do understand the need for the pastor to ensure that she understands what she is doing and fully affirms the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Is there any documentation on this subject I can be pointed to?

She should have been confirmed before the the marriage was convalidated.

I was baptized and received my First Eucharist, but hubby went all the way through confirmation. We were both fallen away and married only civilly. When we wanted to get our marriage convalidated (a term I didn’t know until I came to this forum - I was told it was a '“blessing”), I had to go through adult confirmation classes and get confirmed before we could have our marriage in the Church. It took a while. Things need to be done in a certain way. Check with the pastor to make sure all the t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted.

not enough info, only the pastor and the RCIA director know her status. If she is a baptized non-Catholic she can make her profession of faith and receive first communion when the pastor judges she is ready, and be confirmed at whatever date is set by the bishop. In some places this would be Easter, or Pentecost, or whenever the pastor decides if he has faculty to confirm. Simply ask the pastor.
