I have a question regarding a gesture that I noticed being made during Mass. Today was my fourth time to attend Mass, and as I have previously stated I am new to Catholicism so please don’t think bad of me. The gesture that I am referring to is made by taking the thumb and sweeping it over the forehead and chin.

Can someone please explain this to me?

Did they do this right before the reading from the Gospel?

If so, they are making the sign of the cross with their thumb over their foreheads, mouth, and heart. It is to remind us the that Word of God is to be on our minds, and lips, and hearts. 👍

I always say a silent prayer when doing this. May the word of God be in my mind, on my lips and in my heart
