Question about God during the Old Testament days

Hi everyone,

I am taking a philosophy class at a secular university and have been challenged this semester by those who say that they cannot accept God because of the seemingly terrible things that He asked the Israelites to accomplish. An example would be sending them to war and telling them to exterminate their enemies, woman and children as well.

Can you help me to understand how God was still God during those times, especially in relation to Jesus and His teachings.
