Once you’ve been officially given a godparent, can that tie ever be broken? I ask because I have a godparent who recently has done some things that at aren’t exactly the nicest. I mean, her actions weren’t terrible, but if she is supposed to be setting an example, it’s not an example I want to follow. I’m not looking to disown her or anything. I just want to know how strong this bond is.

If you have not been confirmed, you will be choosing a confirmation sponsor. This person does NOT have to be your baptismal Godparent. If you have already been confirmed, then pray for her. (well, pray for her anyway, but you know what I mean).

She was also my sponsor…

Godparents (aka sponsors) cannot be changed because it was a fact of history that they sponsored you at Baptism/Confirmation. The past cannot be changed.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to follow her example. It also does not mean you aren’t free to choose someone else to follow as a good example.

But the past can’t be changed and sponsors from a Sacrament cannot be changed after the fact.

The bond is as strong as the relationship between the candidate and the godparent, in short, as strong as and influenced by the same factors as any other human relationship. Yes if there is a good reason you can sever your personal relationship with this person, but no you can’t go back in time and change history. He is the person who acted as your godparent during baptism and what it is is what it is.
