Is anyone in hell? Should we hope that everyone gets saved in the end?
do we know one single person in hell? (I also believe hell exists)We have good reason to believe that there are souls in Hell.
The Catholic Church does not teach that anyone is definitively in Hell, although it does teach that the truth of Hell (and hence, the possibility for one to “end up there”) is true.Is anyone in hell? Should we hope that everyone gets saved in the end?
Where does the Catholic Church teach that? Thanks.Sacred Scripture plainly teaches that many persons are sent to Hell. We cannot hold that Hell is empty, as this would be contrary to Tradition and Scripture.
It doesn’t diggerdomer. You are correct. We are required to believe in the existence of hell. Yet we are unable to judge as to whether or not any particular soul is in hell. It is our Christian duty to pray that all are saved – even though we know that it is possible, even extremely likely, that all will not respond to the call of the Gospel.Where does the Catholic Church teach that? Thanks.
It is true the Church makes no distinction as to what specific souls go to hell, but the Church authoritatively does teach that souls go to hell, namely those who die in a state of mortal sin:CCC#1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.”It doesn’t diggerdomer. You are correct. Blessings,
Not quite…“those who die in a state of mortal sin…” may be zero or more than zero. We don’t know for sure that anyone in in hell. But we do know for sure that our actions could take us there. Is anyone in hell?
Of course! we should hope that everyone gets saved. Why wouldn’t we? Why would anyone want someone someone to be in hell?Should we hope that everyone gets saved in the end?
If God desires that all men be saved (1 Timothy 2:3-4) then we can and should desire that as well. But we must also accept God’s revelation that hell exists and that it is possible to end up there. Is anyone in hell? Should we hope that everyone gets saved in the end?
I read it differently. The text does not seem to suggest a qualification that “those who die in mortal sin” may be zero. This would also be consistent with Church-approved apparitions (such as Fatima) in which damned souls are described (not identified), no?Not quite…“those who die in a state of mortal sin…” may be zero or more than zero. I understand how one could read it that way. I just don’t think the Church, in this passage is saying definitively that there are such souls. I don’t see how the Church could say definitively that someone dies in mortal sin, that’s only known by God.I read it differently. Whatever approval the Church gives to apparitions does not mean that any attendant visions or messages imparted are doctrine.
What about people like Hitler, Jack the Ripper, etc?We don’t know for sure that anyone in in hell. But we do know for sure that our actions could take us there.
