Question About Holy Thursday

Hi all,

This is my first Holy Thursday celebration and I’m a bit apprehensive about the process. As usual I am worried I’m going to do something wrong.

All I know about the mass is that we leave in silence – it says that on the bulletin very clearly. But what else should I probably know? I took a Palm home last Sunday, should I bring it with me? Some people say bring it back right away, others say keep it until the following year.

Also, how does it work with adoration. Do we leave mass and then come back for adoration?
Or does mass lead right into it?

I’m hoping to get this cleared up before church tomorrow night.

These are good questions. I hope you get some answers also because I’d also like to know.
 
It will be vary by parish to a degree, but as a rule:


  1. *]The Holy Thursday Mass will also have the washing of the feet
    *]Don’t bring your palm
    *]The Eucharist will be removed from the tabernacle, so don’t genuflect when you leave
    *]The holy water font will probably be empty
    *]At my parish, the eucharist is moved to a tabernacle set up at a side altar and people are encouraged to pray after Mass.

No. Keep your palm at home until the Sunday before next Ash Wednesday. The custom is to tuck it behind a crucifix or other image of Jesus.

On the Sunday before Ash Wednesday next year, bring it to the Church, and the priests will burn them all. The ashes from the burned palms will be used in the Ash Wednesday ceremony.

Adoration will likely go until midnight, so if you want to go home and then come back, you can do that, or if you want to stay and do the first hour, you can also do that.

Chances are that there is a sign-up sheet where you can sign up to do an hour of Adoration, or else different groups have been assigned already for a particular time period. If you didn’t sign up and you aren’t part of an assigned group, then simply come or go to Adoration as you wish.

Forgive my ignorance, what does genuflect mean?

Also, what exactly do we do during Adoration?

Just a small note; when the Eucharist is exposed for all to see and worship, you should genuflect but with both knees to the floor and a deep profound bow. Remember this is truely the Lord himself we are now before.

From the Latin “genu” meaning “knee” and “flect” meaning “bend” normally it means to bend one knee to the ground. A “double genuflexion” is to bend both knees to the ground, or in other words, to stand on your knees.

We kneel before the exposed Eucharist and pray to Jesus, or simply contemplate on Him.
