Hi all,

I have a question about human spirits and what they are and aren’t allowed to do. I understand that once we die we either go to Hell, Heaven or Purgatory (a pathway to Heaven) and I understand that souls in Hell are not allowed to come back to the Earth or move to Heaven.

My question is: does God permit souls of people who are in Heaven to come back to Earth? Can you also tell me where the answer to this question comes from so i can inform myself further?

Thanks so much,

Plomos

They do not come back to earth in the sense of taking on a new body, but they may be permitted by God to appear to the living.

If your asking “can God do this?” Yes; He is an All Powerful Good God

Does He? ON VERY RARE occassions and only for the Spiritual benefit of those God permits to witness this miracle and their personal salvation.

Certainly, Mary the Mother of God has come to earth on multiple occassions. So we know that it is a real possibility.

STUDY the lives of Saints and you’ll encounter others too:)

Thanks for the responses. I suppose I wasn’t completely clear to start with as far as my question goes. I’ll use a hypothetical situation to see if this makes more sense as a question.

Lets say we know that Bob’s grandma died 20 years ago and is presumed to be in Heaven. Bob starts hearing things in his house at night but knows that normally no one else is in the house with him at night. The crux of the question is is it possible for Bob’s grandma’s spirit to really be in the house? I know that there have been famous saints who have appeared again on Earth in one way or another i.e. Mary & others, but is there a way to know the difference between just hearing odd noises in a house compared to someone/something actually being there?

Hopefully that makes a little more sense, and thanks PJM for the links

Many souls from Purgatory appeared to St Padre Pio and other saints. We also have stories of souls of religious appearing to members of their order requesting masses and prayers. I wonder if a place , considered “haunted”, could be a soul from purgatory making its presence felt, but it is only through the mercy of God that the souls of the dead appear to the living.

An American Catholic exorcist, actually the one on whom the movie The Rite was partially based (the young deacon character, though he was really a middle aged priest, and the exorcist he studied under never became possessed himself) was on Catholic Answers Live a few months ago and claimed that humans spirits sometimes really are active in 'haunted" houses. Other times, he said, it’s actually demons.

Nothing like that can be presumed for a start. We do not know where people go when they die. Only God knows that. We all like to think our loved ones are in Heaven but we cannot say they are.

As to your example, if God permits a soul to appear to someone for a specific purpose that soul would not be hiding and making noises around the house so if anyone is simply hearing things go bump in the night then its not a soul from heaven!
