Jesus told those who He healed to “Go, and now sin no more”.

Was this a command, or was this advice…? In other words, was this Him bestowing another miracle in the form of a special Grace -the ability to be sin free? Or just a friendly tip.

Also, did He say this to all those whom He cured or only some of them…?

I’d like to know the Church position on this, if there is one.

There are no references to the verse in the Catechism. You can read what ECFs said about the verse on this page. Just scroll down to John 8.

No, he did not bestow upon people the ability to be sin free. He is talking about reforming one’s life and making a firm ammendment of purpose, just as we do in confession.

I found this:

1. Jesus went to the mount of Olives. 2. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3. And the Scribes and Pharisees brought to him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4. They say to him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what say you? 6. This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8. And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even to the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said to her, Woman, where are those your accusers? has no man condemned you? 11. She said, No man, Lord. And [Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more.*

Augustinus says:

“Jesus said to her, Neither do I condemn you; I, who you feared would condemn you, because You found no fault in me. What then Lord? Do You favor sin? No, surely. Listen to what follows, Go, and sin no more. So then our Lord condemned sin, but not the sinner. For did He favor sin, He would have said, Go, and live as you will: depend on my deliverance: howsoever great your sins be, it matters not: I will deliver you from hell, and its tormentors. But He did not say this. Let those attend, who love the Lord’s mercy, and fear His truth. Truly, Gracious and righteous is the Lord”

Amazing…! Here we see Jesus save a womans life, just like he did those who were sick or suffering from physical defects… Except here He did it without a miracle at all, but by other means – He then includes the famous “go, and sin no more” like He does any other time He saves a person… But are we sure there were no miracles here…?

I think we can see that Jesus must have known what would happen. He must have known that all the men would have seen their own faults and walked away. How AMAZING that no man can lie to the face of God… But if it were not Jesus asking the question, would the Scribes have been more likely to deny their own faults…? I’m suggesting that they may have not had a choice here. A grace may have been forced upon them. (miracle).

Likewise also, if it were not Jesus telling the woman to “go, and sin no more”, would she not be more likely to dismiss the call, and go out and sin again…? In other words, if God commands something of you, and he “graces” you, maybe it cannot be undone except by Him.*

No, he did not bestow upon people the ability to be sin free.
Are you sure…?

If this were the case, there would be no point in praying for people though, right…? We pray for the sick and the disabled, the blind and the dying – the same ones that Jesus healed/saved.

We also pray for those who live in sin – the same ones that Jesus healed/saved… So why do we pray to Jesus to heal people from sin if He will not do it…?

The people were ready to KILL her for her sin. No Mercy. Jesus was NOT ready to condemn her. Jesus showed her Mercy.

By His actions, He forgive her her sin and commanded her to sin no more. Jesus gave her a fresh start. But it remained up to her to sin no more. Surely she understood, coming so close to be stoned to death, that grave sin can kill.

Jesus is about forgiveness and giving all of us of a second chance if we but repent of our sins and do our best to amend our lives.

This is how I understand that passage.

See also John 20 where, after His Resurrection, Christ granted the Apostles the authority to forgive sin. We are so lucky to be able to ask and receive forgiveness and achieve Reconciliation BEFORE we die. Major reason for being Catholic.

He has granted me the ability to be free of certain sins through confession. Not any ability I posess, but Him working through me.

I bear witness to it, here, today, to you, that I struggled for decades to eliminate certain sins from my life, and nothing worked except confession. I made a 37 year confession and it stopped - wasn’t easy - but I have been free, healed, for going on five years.

The sacrament of confession is a sacrament of healing. That is how it is listed in the Catechism, under the heading of healing. I have been healed. But it is because of Christ. I literally have nothing to do with it.

He gives them the grace. They must cooperate with it. They have free will.
We have the free will to pick and choose our influences from our given experiences. We can choose the Church with confession and the sacraments, such as communion… But isnt it when we take communion with Christ that the Supernatural Graces take place…?

So is’nt it the very presence of Christ being with us physically that somehow Graces us towards purification, and towards “friendship” with God? If this is true, then surely we can also believe that coming eye to eye with the living Jesus Christ in Person with all His glory, would have been even greater. Just imagine looking into the eyes of God…

If the “presence” of Jesus is where Grace comes from, then I’m sure that those who met and believed in Him were sin free the rest of their lives because of Him.

Besides this, if Jesus were to only have helped people with the physical temporal aspects of their lives, then His miracles would have bore no fruit… He would have merely been a magician. But really, He was most concerned with saving souls. He surely would have opened the gates of heaven and drenched those who believed in Him with the full force of the Holy Spirit. They received Grace so pure, we have no idea.

I thought of this all right here as this thread happened. I don’t know why I started this thread, and I didn’t know it would lead to the sacraments like it did. How was I influenced into thinking this? Nobody told me this that I remember. So was it the devil? Was it God? I dont know, but all i do know is that I need to get to confession and receive Jesus. I need healing.

Thanks for participating. You’ve all helped me very much.

And yet, we know this statement is not true.

Peter sinned, he denied Jesus.

Judas sinned, he betrayed Jesus.

Even those in direct contact with Jesus fell and sinned, the effects of original sin remain. Being healed by Jesus, receiving sacramental grace from Jesus, being in the presence of Jesus-- none of these completely remits the effects of original sin nor the inclination to sin.

Frankly, to state otherwise is heretical.

If you can’t understand that Jesus and His Church which is the “Temple of the Holy Spirit” filled with the sacraments and His presence is our only hope in combating Satan, then that is Worse than heresy. It’s blasphemy.

Jesus even said Himself that Satan was one of the twelve. Judas was possessed. Now please, let me go.

I’m taking a break from the forums. Pray for me. I cannot respond back.
