A student posed a question after reading Leviticus 12:8 - why did the purification ritual require the woman to make a sin offering? What is the sin for which she atones?

Thanks,
Kathy

My Tanakh says that traditional translation would be the equivalent of ‘offering of purgation’ - in other words a purification offering.

Was it because of the flow that she needed to be purified?

It’s about childbirth in this case.
This is going to sound silly, but the impure because of childbirth and menstration always bothered me. Why did women become impure because of something that God made them to do?

God ‘chose’ us because we were the tribe with the greatest potential for OCD. 🙂

Thank you very much - that was exactly what I was looking for. It makes sense within that context.

Peace,
Kathy
