I apologize if this is posted in the wrong forum, but I’m not really sure where to put this under. Seems sort of trivial, but it’s been bothering me a little bit, and I appreciate any thoughts/opinions.

I know that as Catholics we do not believe in “luck”, and eschew all talismans/charms/whatever to attract it. My issue is that I like the little Oriental waving cats, which are kept in Chinese homes to attract “good fortune”, “luck”, and wealth, among other things. I just think the little cats are cute, and would like a collection of them, but I wonder if it’s really a good idea since the intent behind the cats is a pagan ideology.

Am I thinking too much about this, or is this something I should be wary of?

I’m no expert, but my main concern would not be with the object itself, but with giving scandal to those who know you are Catholic. If you had a large number of them, however, it might be obvious that you are using them as a decoration and not for superstitious purposes.

I’d thought about that, too. I certainly don’t want to cause scandal, and I appreciate your (name removed by moderator)ut. Thank you 🙂

I have seen the waving cats and they are cute. I didn’t know they were supposed to bring luck or wealth. I thought they were just a cute decoration.

I don’t know for sure in this case, but I know with Mortal Sin you need to have full consent/intention. If your intention for putting these decorative objects in your house for the sake of decoration and not for good luck I believe you should be fine. Don’t mark my words though because I am not sure myself! :o

Perhaps you can get it blessed by a priest. 🙂

It depends on which paw waves — I believe if the left paw waves, it’s beckoning luck; if the right, then wealth.

“Am I thinking too much about this,”

Yes

If you think the cat is cute, and cute is a value to you, buy the kitschy little cat.

Would anyone think I am superstious because of the St. Benedict medal I have hanging at my door?

I personally believe if we put too much faith and emphasis on so-called “lucky” objects this can be dangerous… superstitious… uncanny… demonic
