Question about martyrdom

I know avoiding martyrdom by denial is a mortal sin. What if you avoid martyrdom by defense and possible violence, without denying Jesus, because of, for instance, not wanting a disabled love one to be left alone. Is that a sin?
 
I wonder about this, too.

Must we all desire to die a martyr’s death? :confused:
 
to boil it down : when if ever is it okay to avoid martyrdom for "other " reasons, and if so, what are ways to avoid it aside from denial(mortal sin) , that would be acceptable and not gravely sinful
