So, today I walked around the property of my local parish to acquaint myself before attending RCIA classes. On a section of the property, there was a statue of Mary in a the garden.

On the statue, there was a string of brightly colored and folded papers around her neck (pink and yellow/orange I think?). What are these papers and what is the purpose of putting them there?

I’ve never come across this.

I wonder, could it have been something the Children’s Liturgy have done as an activity?

People do a lot of things in conjunction to praying with Mary for their personal intentions.
It’s nothing “official” or some kind of teaching.
Likely some children put together something in their Catechism class and “presented” it to her for her intercession.
Peace.
