I notice in the schedule paper we get at Mass that they have a Mass of obligation this Thursday. Now I understand that, what I don’t understand is the Mass scheduled for Wednesday. It is scheduled at a time that it usually is not on a Wednesday. Should I go to this Mass or is it just like Saturday evening Mass where you go to fullfill your Sunday obligation? Is there something special on Wednesday that I do not know about? The Mass for this Wednesday is called, “Mass for Ascention”.

Thank you for your help

Hi Shinobu: If the Mass for Wednesday is scheduled at 4 P.M. or later, it’s a “vigil” Mass for the Ascension.

My priest has two parishes about 15 miles apart. This year (an odd numbered year) the parish I’m in has all “vigil” Masses, and the other parish has Masses on the actual day (in this case, they have a Mass on Ascension THURSDAY and WE have a Mass at 7 P.M. on Wednesday which is the VIGIL for Ascension). It counts, thankfully.

Next year (even number), OUR parish will get the “actual day” Masses and the other parish the “vigils”.

So I’m pretty used to the every-other-year "vigil"ite Masses. Since I’m going to Mass at 7 P.M., I’ll be celebrating “in spirit” with you if you go on Wednesday too!

God bless.

Oh, such a fast answer! Thank you very much. The Wednesday Mass is after 4PM so it must be Vigil as you say. I’ll eventually learn all this one day but in the meantime thank you for answering my silly questions!

Thank you very much!

to throw another curve into the mix, my parish is observing Ascention Thursday on Sunday.

I think I’ll go on Thursday anyway.

Mike
