I just have a question about Mormon beliefs - I read this in another thread and just want clarification - to find out if this is true and get more information.

Is it true that Mormons believe and teach that God the Father has flesh and bones, He physically impregnated Mary and that is how Jesus was conceived?

If so, what is the Biblical/Scriptural basis for this belief?

Thank you for your help.

Jay,

1–Yes, a perfect exalted physical body.

2–No. Based on item 1 and on the repeated LDS teaching from the Book of Mormon as well as the Bible, as for example Alma 7:10 “he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.”

3–The Biblical basis for the belief that God the Father has a perfect exalted physical body is in Genesis 1:26-27 and in John 5:19 and in Acts 7:55-56, which notes that Stephen

55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Yes, it’s in one of their spiritual writings: Pearl of Great Price, Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Convents, I don’t recall off hand which one, it does say something like “God once was what we are now.”

We Christians believe the opposite: St. Athanasius is quoted saying “God became man so that man could become god”

Also, if you follow the LDS beliefs, you would see that it is incest as they belief that each person was created through God’s physical relations with his wives in Heaven and that people initially were born as spiritual children of God and then at some point in history, they are each born into this world with flesh and blood - so Mary is actually literally his daughter and He not only cheats on His wives by sleeping with Mary, but it’s Incest.

I’d have a really hard time with that if I were a Mormon because only people who are “Temple Worthy” can enter into a LDS Temple - well if God is committing Adultery and Incest, then why does God hold a double standard for his followers? Plus, how can anyone have a true respect and love for someone who actively commits sins like that anyway? Eeew and ik and yuck all rolled into one.

Hard to follow the logic where there is none.

Jay,
By the way, I’m age 54 and have taught LDS church classes all my life and been active LDS all my life and have read all LDS scriptures many times including the Holy Bible many times. I have no qualms about LDS beliefs being consistent with the Bible. They are consistent, though others are taught differently out of, usually, ignorance or a private agenda.

OK. Thanks for the answer. I honestly don’t see how John 5:19 or Acts 7:55-56 point to God the Father having flesh and bones. I’ll have to check Genesis later - I don’t have an OT handy right now.

Did any of the Early Church Fathers ever teach this concept - does anyone know? If so, please give me a link to read and does anyone know at what point Christians would have stopped believing this?

Monica,

Were you formerly LDS? Just curious. 🙂 I think I did also read that Mormons believe God is married to a heavenly mother who lives on a planet somewhere with Him. Perhaps Parker can answer that, but I’ll have to look into more the incest thing. You are right ewwwwwww!!!

I truly don’t understand Mormon beliefs - they seem to be waaaaaay out there, so I figured I would try to learn more about why people would actually believe these really weird (to me) things.

Again, thank you everyone for the help.

mormonism is a false religion, invented by a false “prophet” to dupe his followers and to satisfy his carnal desire to have sex with other men’s wives and daughters. Joseph Smith dreamed up the “Book of Mormon” with the help of other co-conspiritors and even attempted to run for President. A mob of his outraged neighbors finally dispensed frontier justice to him and his brother. Most mormons would leave mormonism if they were not held hostage by job and familial pressure and economic blackmail. A wacky bunch, for sure.

To answer the original poster of this thread — no I do not believe that at all!!!

Ask me what I believe before you start buying into the recycled hogwash on the forums here or the internet in general.

Again, I repeat, I do not believe such.

OK, I don’t see how Genesis fits either. If you take that literally as Mormons seem to be doing, then God would have to be a hemaphrodite since it also says He created them male and female along with creating them in His image.

Do Mormons then believe that Jews are also and have always been completely wrong since I don’t believe they ever believed that God has flesh and bones?

I seem to be getting more and more confused by all of this. 😦

How is your question being answered? Did you ask me? No you did not. Did you ask any other Latter Day Saint on the forums here? I do not know.

I recognize that Catholics are going to have issues with my church, nonetheless state what we actually believe versus the recycled hogwash that will never die.

 He started a threat asking for answers. You can answer them here, he does not have to specifically look for you, on a discussion forum. Please see how ParkerD, who is LDS, answered the questions. He asked for clarification of what he knows, and it has been clarified by ParkerD.

So, then are you telling the truth about what you believe? Or is Parker? Because he said some of it, yes. The OP was trying to get answers as to what Mormons believe, if you’re a Mormon, set him straight, but be specific.

For the record, I’m a former Mormon. I was taught that God has a physical body but nothing about Him physically impregnating Mary. It seems as though (according to older posts when I first joined CAF, and people that were taught MANY years ago) that this was a belief that was common though not doctrine. It was taught if the person teaching you believed it. There was once a poster who said he had an Ensign or other written teachings that this was in…I can’t remember which poster or how long ago. Sorry. It seems to me that one of the major problems with people getting to the bottom with some obscure teachings is that there is a lot of Mormon teaching of ‘this is a possibilty’ and people aren’t really regulated in what they teach. When I was in the Gospel Essentials class after first becoming Mormon, the teacher had a huge discussion about how there is probably intelligent (human) life on other planets and that there are probably other Christs that have saved those people. You should have seen the look on the missionaries faces when we came out of that one!! I was still supposed to just be getting the bread and milk! 😉 Note: I know that what the guy was saying isn’t doctrine that all Mormons are required to believe…that’s kind of the point I was getting at.

By opening the thread and asking the question I am in fact asking all members of the forum who read the question and choose to answer. Since you are a member of this forum then, yes, I am asking you, along with anyone else (including “any other Latter Day Saint”) here who has the answer. I didn’t realize I needed to specifically address my question to each and every member of the forum who I think may want to respond. :hypno:

Thank you everyone else for your candid responses. I do appreciate them. 🙂

Yes, they believe that, but more interesting is how he got his body. Mormonism teaches that God the Father was once a human just like you and lived on an earth much like this one. By obedience to his god, he was saved and “exalted” (became a god). As a Mormon god, he gets to produce spirit children for eternity with his goddess wives, organize planets and populate them with those spirit children (us). Mormons believe that if they are obedient to their leaders, they too will become gods.
He physically impregnated Mary and that is how Jesus was conceived?
It is undeniable that the LDS church used to teach that openly and proudly. These days, though many Mormons (especially the older ones who remember when it was taught) still believe it, it is not openly taught any more. This belief was taught to me by the missionaries (because I asked) when I was investigating the church in 1975. It was also taught in many classes I attended during my 11 years as a LDS and is taught (though in more subtle language) in the writings of the earlier LDS prophets and apostles. I have posted a few of those quotes here and here. Do a search and you will find more. Only the most blind would refuse to see the clear teaching of physical intercourse in those statements.

Perfect - you summarized it all and that is exactly what happened and what is still happening in that cult. It’s just a one big corporation of crooks who wouldnt hesitate for a second to lie to get the numbers and peoples money by promoting faith and controlling its followers and frightening them when they try to leave. One of these crooks they call prophet Hinckley told the starving Africans (that had nothing and are dying) that to get our of poverty - just give 1/10th of their earnings to God - it made me sick. I wouldnt give $.

Perhaps you should read the Postings #2 & #4 from Parker D an LDS Teacher.
It obviously seems that the two of you have much greater differences than those you are trying to denote with the OP… Maybe you need to review your LDS notes.

Is it true that Mormons believe and teach that God the Father has flesh and bones, He physically impregnated Mary and that is how Jesus was conceived?
The following are quotes taken from Brigham Young’s Sermon of April 9, 1852, found in the Journal of Discourses of the General Authorities of the LDS Church, Volume 1:50-51 (For Forum Members who do not have access to the LDS Journal of Discourses, it is online at journalofdiscourses.org/volume-01/):🙂

Regarding the Virgin Mary, Jesus, Deity:
“When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness.”

“He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost.”

“And who is the Father? He is the first of the human family; and when he took a tabernacle, it was begotten by his Father in heaven, after the same manner as the tabernacles of Cain, Abel, and the rest of the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve. . …”
“It is true that the earth was organized by three distinct characters, namely, Eloheim, Yahovah, and Michael, these three forming a quorum, as in all heavenly bodies, and in organizing element, perfectly represented in the Deity, as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”

“Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven.”

“Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost.”
**
Regarding Adam:**
“When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him.”

“He helped to make and organize this world.”

“He is MICHAEL, the Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken”

“HE is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do.”

Every man upon the earth, professing Christians or non-professing, must hear it, and will know it sooner or later.

When Adam and Eve had eaten of the forbidden fruit, their bodies became mortal from its effects, and therefore their offspring were mortal.

The Desert News
Discourse
By President Brigham Young
Delivered in the new Tabernacle
Salt Lake City, Sunday Afternoon, June 8th, 1873

"How much unbelief exists in the minds of the Latter-day Saints in regard to one particular doctrine which I revealed to them, and which God revealed to me—namely that Adam is our Father and God—I do not know, I do not inquire, I care nothing about it.

Our Father Adam helped to make this earth, it was created expressly for him, and after it was made he and his companions came here. He brought one of his wives with him, and she was called Eve, because she was the first woman upon the earth.

**Our Father Adam is the man who stands at the gate and holds the keys of everlasting life and salvation **to all his children who have or who ever will come upon the earth. I have been found fault with by the ministers of religion because I have said that they were ignorant. But I could not find any man on the earth who could tell me this, although it is one of the simplest things in the world, until I met and talked with Joseph Smith."

Quotes from 4th President of the Mormon Church, Wilford Woodruff, Served 1887–1898. This is one of the quotes:

I say to Israel, the Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as president of this Church to lead you astray. It is not in the program. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so He will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty.” ( The Discourses of Wilford Woodruff, sel. G. Homer Durham [1946], 212–13.)

Can you explain the part I have bolded and underlined? How can God the Father be God if there was some other god before Him? Doesn’t that negate the whole Alpha and Omega, beginning and the end aspect of God who always was, is and always shall be??? Wouldn’t this other god who God the Father was obedient to actually be God then?

Boy, are you going to get a bunch of private messages from thecourt.

Just in case you aren’t/weren’t aware, He claimed to be lds, then he claimed to be Catholic, then he said he received a protestant baptism, now he’s back to lds.

Have fun with that. 🍿
