Hi everyone,
Just a quick question about the bible I just got. I bought a Duoay Rheims bible and I remembered being taught in a study way back when that authentic “okay to read” bibles for Catholics will have “Nihil Obstat” and “Imprimatur” written in the legal info near the beginning of the book. This one that I have has “Imprimatur” in it but not “Nihil Obstat”. Now, from what I understand the Imprimatur is the one that I really need, as it means that is free from errors and it was approved by a bishop and given the stamp of approval for printing. The Nihil Obstat only applies if there is commentary, correct? And that this commentary has been reviewed and approved by a qualified church official (whoever that is?) and is declared free of moral or doctrinal errors. So, if my bible does not have the N.O. then that’s probably because it does not have any commentary? I did briefly look through it and it doesn’t seem to have anything like that, so I hope I’m good to go?

I hope I got that all correct, if not I’m sure one of you will correct me.

I did try google, but I kept getting definitions of the words and this one person who wanted to know if a bible that had neither was okay lol. So, didn’t quite answer my question.

Thank you!

It’s not necessary to have both. Or even one any more, but I would rather expect Bibles to have one.

Imprimatur = "let it be printed. "
Nihil Obstat = “nothing objectionable / no obstacles”.

Blessings,
Stephie
