Now my memory is a little hazy of My First Communion, but I vaguely remember The Eucharist being leavened, or at least unleavened but different than normal Eucharist. Just wondering if my First Communion would be valid in both situations.

Well, it’s not like Baptism or Confirmation, which imprint a character on your soul. If for some reason (like improper matter) your first Communion was invalid, then your “second” becomes your first. Nothing needs to be done about it.

if you don’t know for a fact, that is, you were involved in making the bread and know for certain leaven or other illicit ingredients were added, put it out of your head

depending on when or where you made your first communion it is possible somebody made homemade bread, using only wheat flour and water as prescribed, which would still come up heavy and “bready”, not flat wafers of the common kind. don’t worry about it. spend this energy dealing with your life to day. The evils of the day are sufficient thereof.

even if worst case scenario improper matter was used, the practice was illicit and even if the sacrament that particular day was invalid, you have received communion under the proper form many times since then. None if it would have been your fault, or your guilt anyhow. Get it off your mind and thank God for the Eucharist you share today.

puzzleannie gives good advice. Leavening only makes the sacrament illicit, it is still valid. The reverse is true in Byzantine Churches where the bread is normally leavened. Either way, it is still the Eucharist.

The leavened or unusual only the species. The Eucharist (Christ’s body) is beyond that and the same regardless of the usual or unusual species. The required material is wheat bread, using unusual form may be illicit but valid.
